I am a retired high school teacher with 19 years in the public schools in Texas and Florida. I have been tutoring a variety of students since 2001 both in Florida and here, in Virginia. I am well skilled in helping elementary and middle school students catch up to their grade levels. My recent successes including helping one elementary student who is currently in the 3rd grade (who was reading at 1.0 in November of 2014 to 3.0 today) and last winter I helped a high school senior improve his writing SOL score from 368 to 435.
I love tutoring students and helping them to find their love of learning. I have tutored all subjects for students in elementary and middle school, and for students in high school, I generally focus on English and reading. I use humor and anecdotes to teach concepts. The students themselves often teach me as much as I teach them. I enjoy working with them and I love watching my students find their own unique learning techniques. Excellent English Tutor. We accomplish a lot to go over the lessons. Maribeth teaches me SAT lessons, new words, sentence structure and oral conversations.
She is always on time and utilizes the time efficiently to complete the task at hand. She checks and follows up with emails.
She has been tutoring my 9 year old for two weeks. My daughter is understanding math and grasping the concepts she needs for Advanced Academic Math. I would recommend Maribeth.
Maribeth is patient, understanding with our son and her flexibility with our hectic schedules is excellent. Definitely recommend her for your child's tutoring.
Maribeth was extremely patient with my boys. She was able to get them on track with their writing skills and grammar after the first session. She adjusted her teaching methods to best suit my children's learning style.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I started tutoring in 2001 and have worked with students from preschool through high school. I have brought special needs students from needing out of class time with specialized teachers to being mainstreamed at their appropriate grade level. There have been three third grade students that have failed SOL in math whom I have worked with and brought them up to grade level. I am currently working with an 8 year old who was reading at 1.0 in November of 2014 to 3.0 currently. I would appreciate your considering me for tutoring elementary students.
Although my degree is in secondary education with a major in English, I have tutored children from preschool through high school. With children initially learning to print, I encourage them to keep their letters even in size and to use the guide lines. Currently I am working with a fourth grader who is learning cursive. We differentiate from lower case and upper case letters. She is having trouble with the cursive forms of lower case v, w, r,o and v. I have given her a cursive handwriting book to use when we are not together.
