Hi. My name is Yonnie. Through my ample tutoring experience, I am demonstrating that I am an outstanding tutor who teaches the Korean language with confidence and zeal.
Being a native Korean you can trust that you will always be taught standard, accurate pronunciation and correct grammar. Having lived for many years in both Korea and the United States, I am extremely comfortable with both cultures. It is my goal that the instruction I provide opens my students to the real, everyday, Korean language in ways that simply aren’t available through textbooks, websites, or wherever else you care to search.
***********
I was born and raised in a large city, just south of Seoul, Korea. I am married to an American and have been living in the U.S. for more than two decades.
When I was a college student in Korea, I had a passion for teaching poor children, hoping to boost their chances for academic success. For two years I taught the English language during night school at the local town center, helping them to achieve their high school GED.
Following college, through jobs at the office of foreign-owned company in Seoul, and later, on U.S. military bases in Korea, I gained experience of translating Korean to English and English to Korean, interpreting documents, and teaching the Korean language to American soldiers nearly every day.
After my marriage to an Air Force officer and relocation to the U.S., I attended Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, majoring in Management Information Systems. I completed my studies, graduating with honors (cum laude). Then, my family returned to Korea for a two-year assignment. While there I worked for a U.S. Army brigadier general. Language translation services and the interpretation of documents were a regular part of my job.
Upon returning to the States, I raised my son and taught him the Korean language since he was born. From the time he was a baby, I spoke to him only in Korean at home. He is now 19 years old and fluent in Korean with perfect pronunciation. To experience the real Korean language, which is a major part of a nation’s culture, I took him to Korea during several summer breaks. Due to his strong familiarity with the Korean language, he was able to translate Korean sermons for a church youth group during regular Sunday services.

At my church in Bethesda, MD, I volunteered to teach Sunday school. Over a ten-year period I taught elementary grade students and students up to their late teen years. The kids spoke a mix of languages, English and Korean. By being fluent in both languages, I was better equipped to approach the kids and was able to educate them better for a brighter future.

As a proud ambassador representing my wonderful country, I would like to introduce you to Korea by teaching its language with that same passion, sharing my deep love for the Korean culture during these lessons.

Patient and Professional Tutor

My 15 year old daughter had her first tutoring session today with Yonnie and she really enjoyed it. Yonnie is professional and easy to work with and my daughter was excited to share what she learned with me afterwards. I feel that my daughter will gain a solid foundation in Korean and she is looking forward to her next lesson.

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor

My daughter felt that Yonnie was the best Korean teacher she has had thus far. Yonnie corrected her grammar on a few key points and really helped with pronunciation. Looking forward to continuing with her services.

Patient and experienced tutor!

My first session with Yonnie seonsaengnim consisted of a review of the korean alphabet and basic phrases. Although I had already gone over these things in self-study, Yonnie gave me a great many useful tips that would've probably taken me months to realize. During the lesson she was always very patient and would repeat words so that I could get a better sense of the pronunciation. You can tell that she's passionate about teaching about the Korean language, which is always a very important quality to have! Next lesson we'll move on from the alphabet to chapter one in the book. I can't wait!!

Passionate and very patient teacher!

I had been learning Korean from Yonnie for over half a year, and I felt I have improved quite a lot under her teaching. She is an extremely patient, knowledgeable, and passionate teacher. She taught me not only the language, but also Korean culture such as songs, poems and folk tales - which are very fun to know about. Yonnie is an amazing teacher and a great person. I am glad to know and learn from her:)

Excellent teacher

7/12/14 We were very pleased with my daughter's first Korean language lesson with Yonnie. My daughter felt quite comfortable with Yonnie, who is a friendly and patient teacher. Yonnie gave my daughter some homework, and she is very excited to study and be prepared for their next session together. My daughter has many questions, and she is thrilled to have a native Korean speaker who can guide and teach her. Thank you, Yonnie! 8/1/14 My daughter is learning so much from Yonnie. Highly satisfied.

I am highly satisfied with my first tutoring session with Yonnie M. She laid out the plan she wanted to use to help me become more proficient. She took the time to carefully explain her thoughts on why this would be the best plan to go forward with and asked for my input. She is very patient and tolerant when I would not pronounce the words/vowels/constants correctly. I think she is a great teacher. I had my second session with Yonnie and am amazed at her patience. She is persistent, firm, yet very very patient with me, she encourages me at every stumble. I am extremely pleased with the progress I have made and with Yonnie's patience with me. I am feeling more and more confident that I may actually learn to read and write Korean. We are continuing work on the basic building blocks of the Korean alphabet. I believe I am making steady progress in writing and speaking the vowels, constants and combinations thereof. Yonnie is most patient with me and encourages me always. Oct 8, 2013 Yesterday we went over the proper pronunciation and writing of the alphabet to begin our session. Yoonie corrected me and we went on to do a basic review of past lessons. I find that to be very helpful to me. She always asks me if I have anything I want to go over again. We started on Lesson one and I am looking forward to moving on to this phase. She is very, very patient with me and I wish I had started with her instead of wasting my time with a local college course. 10-9-13 Again, we started by briefly reviewing the last sessions progress and resolved any questions I had. Yonnie again displayed the patience of Job, with my pronunciation. We finished the dialogue section of Lesson One and she assigned me homework for our next session. She is a great tutor for putting up with my awkwardness with the pronunciation of some letters. Week 0f 10-14-13 This week we started with reviewing the previous session to see if I could speak and pronounce the words and sentences faster and more accurately. We have finished Chapter 1 and I am highly satisfied with the progress I have made thus far. Yonnie is a hard task master and while firm she also understands the difficulty of this language. She assigns enough homework to keep me interested but not to much to discourage me, which I like.
