About Frank

I was a historian and editor at the Smithsonian Institution for twelve years. I now work part time as a writer/researcher. Recently I have written articles on influential Americans varying from Abraham Lincoln to Ted William to Helen Hayes, and on topics such as the War of 1812, the Civil War, and the American space program.

Sound too stuffy for you? Well, I also enjoy playing sports, mainly masters swimming and basketball, and one of my hobbies is three-ball juggling. Kids especially like when I eat an apple while juggling.

Why would you consider me for tutoring? I have been a volunteer tutor at an elementary school, a substitute teacher at a middle school, and a basketball coach for a youth league. Although my wife, who is a school teacher, deserves most of the credit for raising our son, I like to think I did my part too. We both read and critiqued many papers he wrote for English, history, and government classes, and he did well enough at Woodbridge High School to gain admission to UVA, where he is now a second-year student.

I'm very flexible in my approach. There's no automatic template. Each child is different. I like to evaluate the child's strength and weaknesses, and figure out where to go from there.

If you think your child needs help in writing, in how to go about researching a topic, or in mastering content in history or government, please give me a call. I'd love to help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I have coached youth basketball for several seasons at the Dale City Rec Center and in the Eastern Prince William Basketball Association (EPWBA). I taught my son how to play, and he eventually became a member of the Woodbridge High School basketball team.

English

I'm a professional writer and historian. I have a BA in English and a Ph.D. in American Studies. I also have many years of experience as an editor of a scholarly journal and a historical documentary project.

On a more personal note, my wife and I spent many hours working with our son on his writing skills for AP history, government, and English classes at Woodbridge High School. Now a sophomore at the University of Virginia, he believes one of the reasons he was admitted there was the quality of his essay on the college application.

Swimming

I am a member of the Virginia Masters Swim Team. I regularly compete in events, such as the 100 and 200 meter free style races as well as open water 1-mile swim competitions. In terms of teaching, I have compiled a good body of information on swimming strokes and have helped the child that I mentor learn to swim.
