About Elisabeth

Dear students and families,

I am a special education teacher for middle students with special needs. I help my students access the general curriculum. Previously I was an elementary classroom teacher and emergency manager/planner. I have a dual Masters in Elementary Education (1st-6th) and in Special Education for Moderate Disabilities (preK-8th).

I have been trained in the Wilson Reading System, a scientifically proven reading program for individuals that cannot read, particularly students with a learning disability. I have taught all Common Core subjects. Subjects include grammar, reading, vocabulary, non-fiction reading, science, social studies, math, and writing.

My tutoring philosophy is to teach my students what it means to have a growth mindset... Even when students make mistakes and fail, I believe in encouraging students to learn from their errors. The strongest student learns from their own mistakes and the mistakes of others. Work hard and exercise the brain. I completely endorse Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus, as she says - take chances, make mistakes, get messy.

I hope you choose me to partner with you to help you reach your academic goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a second grade teacher, currently employed at a local Washington, DC public charter school. I teach all subjects. I earned a dual Masters in Elementary Education and Special Education.

I also worked as an English Teacher in a private school for six months in Korea. I instructed students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade at all English levels (low beginning to advanced); implementing a complete American curriculum that employed American textbooks and American standards of learning based on grade levels. I taught 46 classes per week, at 40 minutes per class I spent over 30 hours per week in the classroom giving instruction. I taught all core subjects (math, grammar, reading comprehension, non-fiction reading, spelling and vocabulary, science, social studies, and writing) and enrichment subjects (debate, sensory development, and speech). I modeled correct English pronunciation and speech. Additionally, I prepared supplemental work for students in accordance with the curriculum and the students’ needs.

I also have experience teaching 5th, 6th, and 7th grade science and math. I tutored middle school students in an intense year-around, multi-year educational program in Washington, DC called Higher Achievement. During the After-School Academy I supervised and managed a disciplined study hall of approximately 20 scholars (5th-6th grade) that had scholars actively working on homework and supplemental work to help scholars prepare for upcoming assessments, improve academic grades, and increase their knowledge in all subject matter. I answered questions one-on-one and re-taught necessary concepts to scholars to achieve mastery of coursework. I ensured all homework and supplemental work was completed accurately. I prepared individual-specific supplemental work for all scholars on academic probation, tailoring activities to each scholar’s academic needs.

ESL/ESOL

I believe the BEST approach to learning English is to find a subject or topic a student is PASSIONATE about, then study and learn the vocabulary and mechanics to intelligently communicate and discuss the passion.

I am certified to teach English as a foreign or second language. I have earned a TEFL Diploma with a Grammar Advisor Endorsement from BridgeTEFL provided by Bridge Linguatec, Inc.

Phonics

The main reading program I implement is the Wilson Reading System. A scientifically proven reading system that teaches students and adults that are so far behind in reading they must start from the beginning - with phonemic awareness. These students cannot read essentially. This is an far more intense approach but it works! In less than 8 months, I was able to move one student 6 reading levels (from level K to P using Guided Reading levels).

Reading

Reading is FUN! And I make every effort to make it FUN and accessible for my students by letting them have choices when we read. I find out what interests and passions a student has and look for as many appropriately challenging books/articles/magazines/graphic novels/comics/websites that are on that interest. Once you let the student choose...it gets way easier from there.

I have worked as a reading tutor for over 3 years. I have tutored struggling readers that may be slightly behind their grade level, reluctant readers, and readers with disabilities.

I also mentor the students, sharing my love of children's literature with them. I employ a variety of reading strategies and reading games to statistically improve students' reading scores on standardized reading assessments. I work hard to statistically improve all of my students reading scores over the course of a year. Most importantly, I encourage and empower reluctant readers to find reading an enjoyable activity.
