University of Virginia (Physics, Math)
Johns Hopkins (PhD)
I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Virginia in 2009 with a B.S. in Physics and a B.A. in Mathematics. I went on to Johns Hopkins University (JHU) for a PhD in particle theory and graduated in 2016. During my tenure at JHU, I was a teacher's assistant for various physics classes for 12 semesters, and tutored on and off for all 7 years.
I am familiar with all undergraduate and standard graduate topics in physics (e.g. classical mechanics, E&M, stat mech, quantum mechanics, etc), calculus and differential equations, and can additionally teach various specialized graduate courses in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. Most of my teaching and tutoring experience, however, has been with pre-meds. I am familiar with the new MCAT format and have tutored physics for it twice before.
I am a very easy going, friendly, and patient tutor who likes to foster a relaxed environment and am happy to scale the pacing to the students' needs. Different tutoring strategies work for different students, and I like working with students to find the one that works best for them, whether it is Socratically guiding them through problem solving, reviewing concepts in a lecture style, or actively working through problems with them.
I have years of experience at a top university tutoring students with great efficacy. My proudest moment as a tutor was turning a premed's nominal C a third of the way through the semester into an A+ by the end. I am familiar with the gamut of different professors' teaching styles and can guide the student to both learn the material better while emphasizing ways to prepare for specific types of tests.
I have a flexible schedule and am happy to meet when and where is most convenient for you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
