About Matt

Have you ever wanted to learn another language just for fun? I love to study languages, and I am always excited to share my passion for language learning with others. A second language is a path to a new mode of seeing and thinking about the world, a way to gain insight into the mind of another culture, a road to more fulfilling or financially successful work. The journey of learning a new language will be a rewarding and valuable experience.

I've studied 8 foreign languages to varying degrees, and I'm just getting started. There are a number of ways to learn another language; structured high school/college courses, study abroad, private lessons with language tutors, informal learning through casual interactions with native speakers, immersion in a foreign country, online video lessons, self-taught language acquisition, I've experienced them all. And as a student of language, I've learned which aspects of these approaches truly aid in the learning process. As a teacher of language, I incorporate the most useful attributes of various methods in order to create a balanced, successful learning plan for each of my students. Not everyone learns language in the same way. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to acquiring a new language, and I'm committed to finding out the best way to help each student attain their goals in the target language.

My BA in Russian Studies is from the College of William & Mary, where I was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Additionally, I hold an MA in Slavic Languages & Literatures from the University of California, Berkeley. My coursework has included linguistics, teaching methodology, Second Language Acquisition, and the teaching of English as a Second Language. I've spent several years as a private tutor, teaching a range of subjects, including Russian, French, English as a Second Language, as well as the Critical Reading, Writing, and English sections of standardized tests such as the SAT, PSAT, SSAT, and ACT. My focus is upon personalizing the learning experience for each student, helping them to learn in the way that they respond to best.

Whether you want to study a language for fun, or your interest is purely practical, I welcome the opportunity to guide you along new paths to success, relationships, and personal fulfillment. I would be happy to meet with students locally in the Williamsburg area, or we can arrange for convenient online lessons so you can avoid the hassle of driving to a library or coffee shop, or opening up your home. The latter option also allows for more flexibility in scheduling as travel time can be a limiting factor.

I'm looking forward to working with you and helping you succeed in reaching your language-learning goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Russian

I hold a BA in Russian Studies and an MA in Slavic Languages & Literatures. I have traveled and studied in St. Petersburg and Moscow, gaining practical experience with the language. In addition, I have previous experience teaching Russian as a private tutor. Depending upon the goals of the student, I prefer a modified immersion experience for instruction, with emphasis upon conversational and colloquial usage of Russian.
