Michigan State University (Nursing - BSN)
I have been and RN, BSN for 40+ years, over 20 of those years in teaching nursing. For the last 9 years I have been teaching Pharmacology, a subject that I find fascinating and challenging. I have developed tools to help students remember what drugs belong to what drug classification. I use pictures, worksheets, quizzes and occasionally videos to help get the basic principles across so that students truly understand the material rather than trying to memorize it which doesn't work. If students read their text book and successfully complete assignments they will be successful as have 90-95% of my classroom students.
I truly enjoy watching students learn and helping them to achieve their goals. Pharmacology is a difficult subject but it is so very important the nurse understand about the drugs their patients are taking. It can make the difference between life and death and prevent unwanted complications. As I always say to my students on the very first day, "I have to make sure you understand Pharmacology because someday you may be taking care of me and I want to be sure you know what you are doing." In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught nursing for 20 years. I have taught Anatomy & Physiology numerous times during that time. I have also taught Geriatric nursing care and have worked many years in that area of practice.
I am currently an instructor at Medical Careers Institute in Newport News, VA and have been with them this last time since 2009. prior to that I was employed by them on a very part time basis from 2004 until 2008. My specialty is Pharmacology but I also teach some nursing courses such as Acute Care - GI, GU, and Cancer. As part of my teaching duties I also tutor those students who are having difficulty with the material.
