I have a Masters degree in Teaching and I have been a teacher for a total of 21 years. My elementary school teaching experience spans 10 years, and along the way I have earned a Professional Graduate Certificate in TESOL in order to teach ESL (English as a Second Language). I have written and published several articles for teachers of adult education based on my experience teaching adult basic education, ESL and GED classes. I have worked extensively with children and adults and have worked in a variety of settings. I became a teacher in order to help others to think critically and reach their academic goals.
My teaching approach is to assess a student’s current level of knowledge and skills so that I have a starting point from which to build. After introducing new material, I allow sufficient time for student practice with the eventual goal of mastering the subject. These principles apply to whatever subject we are working on, from math to writing to ESL. It makes me happy and proud to see a student grow in confidence and become more and more independent and less reliant on me. Therefore, I see myself as a facilitator as well as a teacher. I help students break large goals down into smaller increments so that step by step they can reach their destination. Wendy met with my fourth grader for the first time last week and she was wonderful. Wendy was very kind and patient as she worked with my daughter on skills she is having trouble with in school. We are excited to work with Wendy next week as well! At that point, she will also do some math enrichment with my second grade son.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
