I have 25 years of experience working in Special Education, in which I hold a Master's degree. I have taught in both New York State, Connecticut and New Kent County. I hold a Professional Educator license in Virginia and "Highly Qualified" status in Elementary Mathematics and Language Arts and Middle School Mathematics.

Since retiring I have done some substitute teaching in Williamsburg/James City schools in the regular elementary classrooms and am familiar with the philosophy and curriculum of the schools. I currently volunteer in a local elementary school on a weekly basis both in a regular classroom and in a resource room. I have tutored elementary and middle school students in the past. I have extensive training in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading, some Wilson reading and Voyager's Mathematics. I have extensive experience in teaching organizational skills, note taking and study skills.

I have worked with LD students, autism spectrum disordered students, and students with ADHD.

I have a positive and easy manner and believe that all students can be successful.

On a personal note, I have raised four children. I have "walked the walk."

Passionate and Dedicated Tutor!

JoAnn is passionate about teaching and helping children. She went above and beyond to meet with my son’s teachers and tailor study sessions just for him. We are very grateful for her dedication and feel extremely lucky to have found her! She is extremely easy to coordinate with and very responsive to outreaches.

Excellent Tutor

JoAnn has been working with our second grade daughter on reading for the last 3 weeks. I have been so impressed with her professionalism and knowledge. She has a structured plan each week and has been able to identify the areas where my child needs help and tailor her lessons to meet those needs. JoAnn is a highly experienced teacher who is equally patient and kind. I feel fortunate to have found such a jewel!
