About Abby

Teaching young children has always been a great passion of mine. I began tutoring elementary-aged students while in high school, which inspired me to become a teacher. I have worked with children in various capacities as a teacher, tutor, nanny, swim team coach and teaching swimming lessons. I am a summa cum laude graduate from Wake Forest University and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. Currently I am certified to teach pre-K - 6th grade. I have been teaching 3rd grade for 6+ years with experience in other elementary grades as well. I specialize in teaching elementary math, reading (fluency and comprehension), and writing as well as SOL preparation. I also enjoy teaching study skills and helping children become more independent and responsible for their work.

From my experience working with hundreds of different students with varying learning needs, I know that students learn best in different ways. What works for one student may not work for another. As your child's tutor, one of my goals is to help to discover how he/she learns best and find his/her learning style. I will use different approaches and techniques to help your child be successful.

I enjoy fostering a love of learning in my students. I believe in the importance of helping students find what they're good at and building their confidence. When a child finds success in certain academic areas, I often see this confidence overflow into other subjects. I also feel it is important to teach children how to set goals and work towards meeting those goals. It brings me great joy and satisfaction to see a child reach a personal goal.

I look forward to working with your child to help him/her meet his/her full potential.

I am willing to tutor in my home, at your house, or in a central location such as the library.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach pre-K-6th grade in the state of Virginia. I have been teaching 3rd grade as a full-time classroom teacher since August 2009. I am a summa cum laude graduate from Wake Forest University and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society.

SOL

3rd grade is the first year students take SOL tests. We spend a large amount of time preparing students for these tests. I have been teaching 3rd grade as a full-time certified classroom teacher since August 2009.

Wonderful Tutor

My son is working with Abby on a couple of subjects. He is getting help with English and Math. He is quite but he feels comfortable enough around her to talk and he loves working with her. She is helping him in English of ways I never thought too.
