About Debra

I have teaching experience spanning three and a half decades. My teaching experience began in Rockingham County, where I taught at Grottoes Elementary for 10 years. During that time I taught kindergarten, grades 2, 3, 4, as well as combination classes. I left that position to pursue a degree in Counseling.

The final stage of my Master's program was an intership placement at St. Francis Central Catholic School, in Morgantown, WV. Following my degree completion, I was employed within that educational community for 22 years -- teaching, counseling, directing the after-school day care, and most recently coordinating campus ministries. I left that beloved community to return to Virginia as a housemate for an aging parent.

I am experienced with teaching elementary reading, and find that individuals learn to read best when reading about subjects of particular personal interest.

I have taught all subjects at the elementary level, but have a love of calligraphy, which makes handwriting skills a joy to perfect. Spelling is a skill I still work on personally, and so will continue to update my own skills as I tutor.

Phonics tends to come and go as an educational skill set. I have found that learning to focus on word parts can not only help with reading skills, but also with interpreting the meaning of words.

It is important for everyone to be a lifelong learner, to find fascination in a variety of subjects. In fact, I learn something from everyone I meet, and would love to learn something from you as we develop skills by exploring a variety of subjects.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

I enjoy teaching handwriting skills, and see calligraphy as the "art" of handwriting, which elementary students can do well with.
