About Barry

I am a licensed CPA (in Virginia), and have been licensed for over 20 years. I owned and operated a CPA firm that specialized in serving the needs of small businesses for almost 6 years. During this time, I kept my clients' books using Quicken and Quickbooks, and trained several clients to keep their own books using those systems. I also prepared individual, sole proprietorship, S corporation, and C corporation state and federal income tax returns, as well as state and federal payroll and sales tax returns. Finally, I provided advice on everything from the type of entity they should use and how they should finance their businesses to what personnel policies they should implement. My clients were mainly in the retail, restaurant, construction, and medical fields.

I was a state sales and use tax auditor for 8 years and a state tax audit supervisor for almost 2 years. I was also an internal revenue agent for over 3 years, during which time I examined individuals and small- and mid-sized businesses. I advised taxpayers on how to modify their accounting systems in order to best comply with tax reporting requirements in all of these positions.

I hold a master’s degree in Accounting (concentration in Taxation). I have taught college-level accounting and taxation classes, and I have tutored college students in financial and managerial accounting and corporate finance since 2008. Finally, I have prepared educational seminar materials and reviewed knowledge-testing materials in these fields.

Though I tutor students at many colleges and universities, most of my students attend classes at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and Excelsior College.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

In addition to holding a Master's degree in Accounting, I consulted with small businesses on everything from financing to hiring employees in my CPA firm for almost 7 years. I regularly tutor students on strategic management, including Porter's Five Forces analysis, Porter's generic strategies, PEST analysis, SWOT analysis, and product life cycle management.

Finance

I teach the principles of corporate finance. I have a great deal of experience teaching capital budgeting and weighted-average cost of capital.

Financial Accounting

I have taught the principles of financial accounting and intermediate accounting concepts since 1988 to business owners and since 2008 to college students. I make it easy to learn how to prepare journal entries, how to adjust and close accounts, and how to prepare financial statements and interpret them.

General Computer

I regularly use personal computers at work and on my own. I use the Windows operating system and regularly load, update and remove applications as necessary. I also use File Explorer and Cortana to search for applications.

Managerial Accounting

I regularly teach students concepts such as cost-volume-profit analysis, preparing a contribution margin (variable cost) income statement, determining whether to make or buy a product, process costing using the weighted-average method, and performing variance analysis. I also take the student through all of the steps of cash budgeting from the sales budget to the budgeted financial statements.

Microsoft Excel

I teach basic Excel functions in all versions of Excel, as well as certain advanced functions. I regularly use pivot tables, SUMIF, SUMIFS, COUNTIF, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH and linked worksheets within a workbook. I am most familiar with Excel for Windows.

Microsoft Outlook

I regularly use Microsoft Outlook at work, including the Calendar and Task functions. I also create custom signatures and set up custom mailboxes.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used PowerPoint to create presentations as part of my job since 2002 and to create educational slides for students since 2008. I regularly create slides with speaker notes, and I have added audio to a slide presentation.

Microsoft Word

I teach basic functions in all versions of Word, as well as certain advanced functions. I have also assisted students in writing papers in APA format. I am most familiar with Word for Windows.

QuickBooks

I have over 10 years experience performing bookkeeping on QuickBooks and training others in its use. I have used it in a variety of industries, from retail stores to professional service firms, and for all types of business entities (sole proprietors, partnerships, limited liability companies, and corporations). I am also a Xero certified advisor.

Tax Preparation

In addition to being a certified public accountant, I emphasized income tax law in my master's degree program. I prepared income tax returns from 1982 to 2003, most recently in my certified public accounting firm. Additionally, I worked as an internal revenue agent at the Internal Revenue Service from 2003 to 2007. Finally, I taught income tax classes for the University of Maryland University College in 2009 and 2010.
