About Thomas

I believe anyone can learn any subject if they can associate with the subject matter. Part of that ability comes from the student, part from the teacher. I have the ability to present subject matter in a variety of ways depending on the student. I have taught grade school age children math with crayons and coloring books (and really bad artwork), teenagers math and science through their daily interactions with the world around them and I have taught college students a full semester of accounting using just a debit card. When it comes to computer science, whether it’s a grandfather learning to surf the internet, a mechanic keeping track of expenses in Excel, or an HOA president making a presentation; I start with a task and then build on the skill set through discovery and testing. I believe the most important thing a teacher has is their ability to connect with the student so that the student wants to learn. I do not accept “I can’t do it” from the student or “he/she can’t do it” from the parent. The student just hasn’t done it...yet.

I believe that education is a lifelong commitment and works different ways for different people. I focus on teaching one-on-one in those subjects that can be figured out, not memorized. I focus my tutoring on Math, Accounting and Business, Physics, and Information Technology. I work on the basics and let the student understand the concept instead of just getting the answer. I believe in teaching the small steps and showing your work. I think that if the student keeps it simple and repeatable, they will do considerably better when the pressure is on. Test anxiety is cured through confidence. Confidence is gained through repetitive success. For my MBA students, I have been able to break down the most complex concepts of Finance and Accounting using real world examples and leveraging previous knowledge to help my students grasp concepts and use them not only on their homework an in their discussion groups, but in real life as well.

Most of all, I aim to teach in a way that ensures the student retains knowledge and can build on it in the future. By achieving that goal, the student learns how to learn. By learning to learn, the investment the student made for the Accounting or Algebra 1 class that is giving them such a hard time today can help them in their college Organic Chemistry or Finance class 4 years from now.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been an accounting tutor for over 9 years and have helped both accounting and non-accounting students to understand both the basic and complex processes of accounting using simple, common sense methodologies. Accounting is an unusual subject for most people but I find that the problem most students have is that they never were taught the underlying principles. It's one thing to memorize accounts and procedures, it's an entirely different thing to understand what you are doing. I find that teaching a few simple processes allows the student to simplify even the most complex accounting problems.

I have worked as a controller, CIO, and CFO for the previous 15 years. I have worked in multinational corporations, small business, franchises, and start ups. I current work in the venture capital arena where I analyze, mentor, and audit startup companies in software development, cloud computing, and biotech. I have extensive experience in all business aspects from IT, accounting, and finance, to HR, sales, and marketing. I have run bootstrap startups and international mergers as well as asset sales and bankruptcies.

Computer Science

I have been in the IS/IT fields for over 20 years. I have experience in hardware, software, networking, programming and IT management.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using MS Excel since its inception and use it everyday. I can help you with anything from basic spreadsheets to graphing and charts and macro programming. I can help set up your personal or business finances in Excel and show you shortcuts and tricks to make you life easier and more efficient.

Microsoft Outlook

I have been using Outlook since its inception. I have configured clients in both POP and Exchange and have been an Exchange administrator for over 10 years. I have also taught dozens of classes at all levels of MS Outlook.

Microsoft Windows

I have configured, managed and trained on all levels of Window since "Windows for Workgroups." I have been a Microsoft IT professional for over 15 years. I am well versed in all levels of Windows workstation and server and have taught dozens of private and semi-private classes at all levels.

Study Skills

I have worked with a variety of students in all age groups on organization, study skills and test taking strategy. I focus on repetitive skills that can be used in any subject to ease test anxiety and allow the student to focus on the things that they know and build the confidence that will help them succeed.

Awesome tutor!!!

Tom is an amazing tutor! If you need help, you should contact him right away! I am a working adult and it has been over 20 years since I have taken a math class. As a degree requirement for my Masters program, I needed to take a Global Finance course. I was so afraid to take this course, that I put off taking it (and finishing my degree program) for three years. I even considered changing my major
