About John

I am a fifth grade teacher for Prince George County Schools. I have taught fourth and fifth grade for the last five years. I earned a master's degree in Elementary Education in 2008, and also possess a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies in 2003. I completed a second master's degree in Literacy Education in May 2012. Learning is a lifelong endeavor. It is the most important endeavor that human beings will ever undertake. As an elementary teacher, the love of lifelong learning is the most important lesson I will ever guide my students through.

My educational philosophy is my guiding principle that I utilize while teaching in every contact I have with a student. These principles are present in every lesson I have ever or will ever present to my students.

Education should be conducted through exploration. Students should be given the opportunity to learn through hands-on, real life connections as often as possible. Exploration of content in that context is the most effective means of learning.

Education should also engage. Learning is not a spectator event. Students must be actively engaged in their learning in all aspects regularly.

Education should also be exciting. Students should be excited about learning regularly, and this needs to be created by the enthusiasm of the teacher. Enthusiasm and excitement are contagious, and in the classroom these are necessary components to successful learning.

Education should be enduring. Students should learn in a way that provides them with lifelong learning and lessons. As often as possible, the educational lessons that they learn should be memorable. Whether it is a song that you sang (Such as the "Mighty Mitochondria- the powerhouse of the cell" song that I learned in high school biology, and still remember today!), a lesson or activity that was done, or a project- education should be enduring for students, and stay with them throughout their lives as much as possible.

Most importantly, education needs to be "educational". Learning needs to take "center stage", and be the focal point of any lesson ever presented to a class, and any class work or activity that is ever done in a classroom. Lessons presented in a classroom must be meaningful and have a clear, concrete educational objective or message for the students.

As a teacher and a tutor, I dedicate myself to find the methods and means to most effectively help each student learn best. I truly believe that each student is unique and it is my duty as a teacher and a tutor to help them find the learning methods that work best for them. That is crucial to their learning success as a child, and will last them throughout their lifetime.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I taught common core content in the state of North Carolina for four school years. I also studied common core content during my second master's degree in literacy education.
