About Madeline

Welcome! I am a flexible, results-oriented university student with teaching experience of over four years. I have taught Tae Kwon Do and dance in the past and later moved on to teaching English as a second language (ESL or ELL) to refugees from varied backgrounds with no prior English knowledge.

Language and the arts have long been passions of mine. Tutoring allows me to pass on those passions to those around me to help cultural awareness and deeper understanding thrive; from vocal arts to Spanish, teaching is a brilliantly rewarding experience that I would love to share with you.

I have working/professional proficiency in Spanish as a result of early acquaintance with the language and a curiosity about "el mundo hispanohablante": the Spanish-speaking world. With a strong base of Latin, Spanish and the other Romance languages come easily to me. I am able to teach beginning to early intermediate Spanish even to those who claim not to have a "knack" for languages. I won over 10 awards in language competitions as a high school student, where my love for grammar and linguistics first caught fire.

As an ESL tutor, I have been thrown many curveballs. Students were placed in my tutoring group straight from their home countries with only "hello" and "my name is _____" in their English vocabulary. Some could read, and some had never seen an alphabet in any language before. During these tutoring sessions I would resort to alternative methods of teaching, whether it was helping a special needs student learn the alphabet or explaining photosynthesis to refugees. These skills are great not only for English as a second language, but also for essay writing (especially MLA format), grammar, and reading for native English speakers.

As a coloratura soprano with a 3.5 octave range, I have been singing for over eight years in ensembles and for six years was trained as a soloist. I began in choirs learning basic breathing, posture, and tone and later added three years of beginning soloist training, learning the formative principles of vocals. Soon after, I started classical training in the style of Italian opera, building upon previous education with in-depth study of recitals, vocal anatomy, sound placement, space, and classical technique from Maria Williams Kennedy. My instructor was a famed "lirico spinto con agilita" soprano who has performed lead/title roles in many locations such as the Metropolitan Opera.

Through the use of curriculum and homework tailored to the specific learning styles of each student, I am positive that you or your student will grow both intellectually and as civic individuals. I look forward to connecting with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I have experience with mathematics of many levels, up through high school algebra, geometry, and statistics. I work well with kids and have taught elementary and pre-school students in the past in a children's ministry.

ESL/ESOL

I previously taught ESL for one year as a senior in high school, and I specialize in conversations, accents, and basics. I have had experience teaching many levels of English language learners, from beginners to advanced. I come from an extensive background of Spanish and Latin studies, so sharpening skills and identifying specific language goals comes easily.

Spanish

I am about 60% fluent in Spanish and have been learning it formally for over ten years. I have experience in many dialects, including Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Argentine, and I excel at teaching foreign languages (I taught ESL previously).

Voice (Music)

As a coloratura soprano with a 3.5 octave range, I have been singing for over eight years in ensembles and for six years was trained as a soloist.
