Old Dominion University (B.A. English)
Old Dominion University (Master's)
I'm a full time English instructor with Portsmouth Public Schools; I've taught from the elementary level all the way up to College level composition classes. My specialty is in writing and reading at all levels. I began teaching because I love working with children, and I especially love helping them discover the freedom and power in the written word. Reading is the gateway to a million different worlds. Reading is my passion, and I believe a passion for reading leads to better performance in all classes and assessments, as well as increased empathy and overall well-being.
Writing is a natural extension of reading. It allows students to think critically and form their own perspectives on the world. Writing properly allows students to articulate their own thoughts and build self-confidence along with academic performance. While I love the classroom, it does not allow me to tailor my lessons to individual needs in the way that I enjoy teaching best. Allow me to guide your child into the realm of literacy, and you will not be disappointed.
I have a B.A. and college teaching certification (18 credit hours Masters classes) in English from Old Dominion University. I also have an M.S. in Education, with a focus on differentiated instruction. I have five years' experience teaching high school (grade 9 to 12, in person and online) and collegiate (composition levels 111/112). I also have one year's experience working in middle school (grade 8 inclusion) and another year substituting for elementary school. I maintain a current Virginia Postgraduate Professional level teaching license.
Learning involves application; my tutoring does not rely solely on reading and writing drills. Instead, regardless of level, I try to make the experience engaging and informative. You will never walk away from a session with me feeling discouraged or overwhelmed. You will always learn something new! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
