Looking for extra help with college / high school math or physics, or college computer science? Perhaps that AP Calculus or Physics exam is looking like a challenge, or your son or daughter would like to improve their SAT scores? I have helped hundreds of students around the country make sense of calculus, discrete math and physics, to name a few popular subjects...check out my reviews and ratings. It's so great when I hear my students tell me they passed that hard mandatory class for their major, got an A on a big test, a 5 on an AP exam, or a 1440 on their SAT. I have a Master's in Computer Science from Stanford, and enjoy helping people learn about math and computer science, as well as related subjects like physics and SAT prep.

My specialties include college / AP classes like calculus and physics, as well as college classes for discrete math, computer architecture, and algorithm analysis. If you find yourself struggling with a challenging math class or challenging teacher, or just need a refresher in trigonometry, probability and statistics, or precalc to get through more advanced math, I would be a great choice to help you. My students appreciate my approach with lots of patience and positive reinforcement.

I have a flexible schedule, and can meet you or your students online, which is the most popular option, or in person after school, or during the day if that's more convenient. Most of my in-person students meet with me either at the library or in their home. At this point, I have a number of regular weekly clients who get priority for future appointments, so not all times shown in the availability list below are schedulable for new clients, but I would be happy to work with you to find a time that would work for you.

My preference is to work with students who want to improve performance in a class or for a standardized test over a series of regular sessions, as opposed to one-time help for a class assignment or test. You might reasonably expect a one-letter grade improvement from weekly meetings over an eight week period; of course, that varies with the student, subject, and situation, so is a goal rather than a guarantee.

Subjects

Computer

C,

C

C is a great programming language, combining the power and performance of assembly language, with the safety and abstraction level of...assembly language. (Little C joke there.) As a computer science major, I have done extensive work with C, and would be happy to help with all you C-based questions.
Computer Engineering,

Computer Engineering

On Wyzant's platform, I often tutor courses in boolean algebra / digital logic as well as computer organization and assembly language. I am competent to consult on architecture and engineering topic including security and performance engineering. I have thirty year's work experience as a professional software engineer, developing and manage software engineering efforts using a variety of languages and operating systems. My specialty is systems software, especially operating systems, networks and databases. I have an MSCS from Stanford in Computer Science, as well as a BS is Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan.
Computer Science,

Computer Science

I enjoy teaching computer science material, especially including some of the more theoretical subjects like data structures and analysis of algorithms, as opposed to primarily teaching programming language constructs. I have a Master's degree in computer science from Stanford, and thirty years professional experience in computer engineering. I work as a systems architect and help mentor junior developers. I was a teaching assistant at the University of Michigan as an undergraduate.
UNIX

UNIX

I have used Unix since there first was a Unix to use back in the 1980s. At various times in my career I have work with and manager people working on the Berkeley Unix and RHEL Linux kernals and applications. I would be happy to help with your UNIX needs.

Calculus,

Calculus

I am among the top in-person calculus tutors in the state of Virginia, while also doing extensive online tutoring for several years on Wyzant and other platforms. (Not to mention that I am a Jeopardy winner, too!) I have helped dozens of students in person and many more online with calculus problems, including differential and integral calculus of a single variable (i.e. College Calc I/II, as well as high school AP AB/BC), including limits, differentiation and integration techniques, word problems, and series. Please let me know if I can be of some help, and we can discuss how to set up a session at your preferred time. Final exams and AP tests will be here before you know it!
Physics,

Physics

I am among the top in-person physics tutors in the state of Virginia, while also doing online tutoring for several years on Wyzant and other platforms. (Not to mention that I am a Jeopardy winner, too!) I work with a lot of students in first-year college programs, as well as AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C programs. I have helped dozens of students in-person and many more online with physics problems, especially involving dynamics (laws of motion, energy conservation, rotational dynamics, momentum, etc) but also waves, electricity and magnetism, and basic optics, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. If I can be of some help, please write to me and we can set up a time to discuss your problems.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

As you can see from my profile, I do a lot of work with calculus and physics. Precalculus is the foundation for these subjects, covering functions, polynomial roots, and especially trigonometry: sin / cosine / tangent, complementary functions, unit circle, identities, equations, formulas and so forth. I would be happy to work with you or your child on precalculus and get you ready for whatever comes next!
SAT Math

SAT Math

As a recipient of a perfect 800 score on the math SAT back in the day, I know what it takes to get through this type of high-stress test. I can help you review the key concepts including ratios, probability, geometry and graphs, as well as help with test-taking strategy, such how to make best use of your time and how to make better guesses when that's necessary. I have worked with many students, and typically focus on helping students achieve about 100 point improvements in their math score, from about 600, to 700 or better. You may see other tutors promise more, but they are not the ones taking the test! I know what it takes to help students master the material so that they can be successful on the test.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

Discrete math is one of my favorite topics to teach, and I have many satisfied students in person and online to show for it! Set theory, combinatorics, graph theory, propositional logic, mathematical induction, boolean algebra. Fun stuff! I work with a lot of students here at Wyzant and on other platforms, including discrete math and discrete structures for computer science. I have taken (and received an A) in college level discrete math (i.e. math for computer scientists vs. calculus), and regularly teach the subject on Wyzant and other services, including college courses using textbooks by Epp and by Rosen.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I tutor Finite Math for a number of online students, including linear systems, matrix algebra, probability and statistics. I would be happy to help with your Finite Math needs.

Knowledgeable, patient, and incredible

Doug taught my son permutations, combinatorics, and discrete math involving mathematical structures. He is very thorough and has many examples on hand to pull out to help expose students to new material while still teaching and reinforcing the topic instead of just going over examples from class or homework. He is very patient and accommodating and it is very apparent how much he cares for his students.

Great to work with.

Mr. Doug- Was very patient. His tutoring helped my daughter to be more confident for her upcoming test. We will definitely request additional class in the future when needed. Thank you.

Pratima, 1 lesson with Doug

Helpful, knowledgeable, and Communicative.

Gave a thorough introduction to physics and what to expect for the rest of the year and for the final AP exam. We went through some sample problems taken from the exam. At the end we did one problem that put to use everything I learned from that class.
