About Elizabeth

I have ALWAYS been a tutor or trainer no matter where I am, even if I wasn't being paid. It's something I do instinctively.

In college, I tutored students at the high school and college level in Biology, Chemistry, and Philosophy. I especially enjoy one-on-one tutoring because I can make the time to learn about my student's interests and hobbies, which allows me to give better examples when teaching difficult concepts. Rather than looking at "X's and Y's" we can talk about soccer balls and footballs or any other combination that helps them see in their own way the idea they've been struggling to understand. By doing this and assessing study habits and learning styles, I have had great success, increasing most students scores by two letter grades.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Biology-Chemistry from Immaculata University (cum laude) and a Masters degree in Bioethics from Case Western Reserve University. In college, I finished a rigorous pre-med curriculum, a minor in Philosophy, and Honors-level liberal arts coursework in History, English, and Theology. I pursued a Master's degree in the field of Bioethics because it combined my interests in philosophy and the sciences.

After working for several years in the field of research support, I am now staying home with my children and looking for flexible ways to earn income and still share all the great knowledge I gained in school.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Through my education (high school through masters degree) and my experience as a tutor, I have been able to tutor algebra with great success. My previous tutoring clients have progressed from a failing grade to achieving Bs and Cs. My success is attributable to the use of curriculum customized for the student's needs and interests.

Biology

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Chemistry. My graduating GPA was 3.72. I worked in the tutoring center as an undergrad tutoring Biology, Chemistry, Philosophy, and Pre-Calculus. I went on to complete a Masters Degree in Bioethics and work in the field of research administration.

Handwriting

My qualifications in early and elementary education are developed through engaging my two children as a stay-at-home mother. I regularly supplement their school work with enriching lessons and experiences that dig deeper than their school curriculum. I have also volunteered time to tutor homeschooling students and other students struggling with elementary math and reading. I have resources to teach standard printing, modern (D'Nealian) manuscript, and cursive.

Homeschool

My qualifications in early and elementary education are developed through engaging my two children as a stay-at-home mother. I regularly supplement their school work with enriching lessons and experiences that dig deeper than their school curriculum. I have also volunteered time to tutor homeschooling students and other students struggling with elementary math and reading.

Logic

I received a 100% grade in my college-level Logic course without attending lectures (which was an option specifically given by the professor). I have excelled with Logic problems since I was a child. I am confident I have the subject matter expertise to tutor in this course up to the college level.

Microsoft Access

I completed a three day course to learn how to use Access 2007. I am also comfortable using Access versions 2003 and 2010. In my professional career, I developed a modest but complicated Access database used to track hundreds of research and funding applications for nearly 75 people. I am comfortable explaining table relationships and the differences between the four most commonly used components: tables, queries, forms, and reports.

I still own the workbooks and accompanying CD's for the three day Access course.

Microsoft Outlook

Prior to my recent move, I worked for four years in an administrative capacity which required the use of Outlook every day. I am comfortable explaining how to use the email, calendar, contacts, and tasks sections of Outlook. I can tutor individuals using Outlook versions 2003 through 2010.

Microsoft Windows

I have daily professional and personal experience using the Windows platform. I have been a Windows user for 15 years. I am comfortable tutoring users in platform versions leading up to Windows Vista. I am not, at this time able to tutor Windows 7 users.

SAT Math

My previous tutoring clients increased their SAT scores by 150-200 points.

Violin

I can teach and tutor introductory violin using my own training (10 years) and the continued instruction of my children. I can provide an introduction to musical notation and proper posture. I can help students develop a sense of familiarity with the anatomy of the instrument (scroll to end button!) and the way the strings make sounds (high sounds towards the left, low sounds towards the right) as well as different effects the violin can make (softer sounds when you press the bow gently, shorter sounds when you pluck the strings, etc.). While I am not a professional musician, I can offer a lower cost option for determining whether a child is truly interested and ready to learn more through a formal class.
