I love tutoring because of the look on a students face when a lesson suddenly "clicks". That feeling of understanding gives them confidence to continue Wanting to learn and that is so important with young children. I have been a school reading helper and am currently help my children's schools with reading quizzes for the Accelerated Reader program.
I have helped my children with their studies as well as a few of their friends in addition to the children at the school. I am a former Army communications specialist which affects my teaching. My approach is to try to break each lesson down to the basics, whether that may be phonics, or basic math skills. I generally will try to let the student show me how they have been attempting to study or work on assignments. Then I can help them find a better way of working on it so that they can have a better understanding of the material, improve comprehension and have a less stressful studying session! I have experience with both advanced students and students with learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD. I would love to help your child to love learning.
I started my children on basic math flash cards when they were in preschool and having those basics down really makes advanced math problems less challenging. Each math problem has a simplicity to it. Once you show a student how to break it down to the simplest form it becomes second nature.
I loved every Biology class I ever took and what makes it so great is that you can get the student out of the classroom or library and let them experience it in real life. I believe in a hands on approach for most science related material and a lot of the time children will retain more of what they learn if there is a hands on activity. Not all students are " book learners".
I am a reading specialist with lots of experience with Elementary school students. I have tutored children who couldn't read in 3rd grade who became avid readers. The main thing idea I focus on is let them read something they are interested in. It doesn't have to be their required book for school or a text book. They will learn to love, or at least somewhat enjoy reading if they are able to at least read about things they are interested in.
I have been in performing choirs since I was 3 years old. I joined the adult chancel choir at my church when I was 12. I was in a 4 part/ 16 voice choir in high school and was all district choir every year with 2 invitations to All State. I studied in the summers with choral director Dean Entsminger both in mixed and women's groups. I did summer musical theater at Shenandoah University for their summer series.
If you are overwhelmed every time you look at your assignments I Know I can help you. We will find a learning format that works for you and hopefully have some fun as well. I look forward to seeing how much you will improve! I love tutoring because of the look on a students face when a lesson suddenly "clicks". In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
