I majored in Math when I went to college the first time around and worked in that field prior to staying home with my children when they were born. I went to work as an IA in the elementary school near our home and began to tutor quite a bit because of that background. I discovered that I loved working in this capacity with my math and went back to school for a second degree in education and earned a Master's Degree in Education with endorsements in LD and MR. I am now teaching Algebra I in middle school and would love to help students be able to feel more comfortable with this subject (as well as elementary in any subject)

I can't say enough positive things about Laura H. She was always responsive, met us in convenient locations and adjusted her schedule to meet with my son. She tutored him in Algebra I so he could pass the VA SOL test. He had previously failed the test but in a few weeks (about 5-6 sessions) she was able to help him improve his test taking techniques and coach him through practice problems to build his confidence. He did all his test preparation during the sessions and did not have to do additional studying, which was helpful since he was also finishing up his first year of high school. She was just as anxious to hear the results of his SOL test as we were. Thankfully, with her help, my son passed! We would definitely work with Laura H. again and we've recommended her to our friends.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's Degree in Education with emphasis in Special Education and endorsement in LD. I have also worked for 10 years in the Roanoke County School system with students with this disability in the collaborative setting, pull out setting, and general ed classroom and feel that I am qualified to do so. I have tutored many students on the side as well.
I teach Algebra I to 7th and 8th graders at the Middle School level in the Roanoke County School System. My undergraduate degree is in Math, and I am highly comfortable with this subject matter and enjoy working with students on this curriculum. This course serves as a building block for all of the further high school coursework and is also the first math course that counts toward high school graduation credits and grade point average; therefore, I feel it is critical to gain a solid understanding of the course material. I have been successful in the classroom with students on this material.
A good portion of the educational coursework for my Master's Degree in Education (with emphasis in Special Education and endorsements in LD and Severe Disabilities) included focused attention on Aspergers.
I have a Master's Degree in Education with emphasis in Special Education and endorsements in LD and Severe Disabilities. Several of my classes in this course of study focused on Autism and strategies for working with students that fall within the wide spectrum of the Autism umbrella. I have worked with a number of students with Autism from Preschool age through 8th grade during my 10 years both teaching and supporting in the classroom as an instructional assistant. Each student and their needs can vary widely and requires individualized focus on their specific needs. Most students with Autism are extremely bright and require focused attention on their strengths to enable them to tap into and utilize their skills.
I have worked for 10 years in the Roanoke County School system as an IA at all levels as well as a Special Education teacher in 5th grade. I also took the Elementary Education Praxis test and feel comfortable with all areas of content at the elementary level. I have tutored a number of elementary students both during the year and for SOL Prep.
I worked in the elementary school setting in Roanoke County for 7 years prior to moving to the Middle school level in all subjects both as an Instructional Assistant and then a Special Education Teacher. My principal placed me mainly in the area of math due to my undergraduate degree in this area and I gained a great deal of experience working with students at all skill levels in this area. I have tutored a number of students on the side as well and am extremely comfortable with all areas of elementary school math.
I teach math at the Middle School level and have worked with all grade levels. Because of my background in math and my undergraduate degree in this area, I am highly qualified to teach this subject. I especially feel like a foundation in Pre-Algebra is important in preparing students for Algebra I and am able to assist struggling students in gaining a grasp of this material as a building block toward higher level math. I have worked with students both in the school system - whole class, small groups, and students with special needs and feel comfortable in tutoring students in this subject.

I have worked with students at all levels in preparation for SOL testing and feel qualified for this from my classroom exposure and experience with this testing.
