About Suzanne

****Preference for Online Tutoring Students*****

Parents: I am an older educator, with a BS in Secondary Education (Chemistry, General Science, and Safety) and a Masters in Counseling and Guidance. I have taught middle school, high school, and college.

I value learning for anyone and recognize that sometimes particularly young people need help in learning how to study. While teaching high school, I created an SAT preparation class (with practice tests and study skill lessons). I have created ASVAB practice tests while managing military learning centers for military personnel.

I am a fun and engaging teacher. I like to work with all kinds of young people, and will work with your student to determine his/her learning style.

Students: Let's find a way to get through your learning obstacles! Learning should be fun...I am an enthusiastic teacher and would welcome an opportunity to work with you and add to your confidence in your studies. All I ask of you is your willingness to listen and try!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AFOQT

AFOQT Qualifications

I am submitting my qualifications as an AFOQT tutor (I am currently an approved ASVAB tutor with WyzAnt). I have been instructing military personnel for over 4 years in preparation for the ASVAB. Several of the subtests for the AFOQT are largely identical to the ASVAB subtests. I am a former chemistry teacher and College Psychology professor so I have multiple techniques at my disposal for teaching young adults in many subjects, but the most often required is that of math. My degree in chemistry involved routine use of math, which has afforded me the ability to not only teach math but help my students find a passion for math they never knew they had! In addition as a High School chemistry teacher, I developed as SAT preparation class to increase students test scores that was the first of its kind in the State of Delaware. I am a good test preparation teacher.

Several of my current 22 ASVAB students are actually studying for the AFOQT.

ASVAB

I managed Military learning centers for Ft. Stewart, where the major course of study was the ASVAB. I defined the coursework as well as practice tests for under-achieving military personnel.

College Counseling

College Counseling

I welcome an opportunity to foster student development through College Counseling. I have a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Guidance and a history of teaching and tutoring all ages, but particularly young adults. I am an effective skill provider in College Application preparation and essay writing; standardized placement skills testing and tutoring; preparing for Freshman year, (time management and study skills; and goal setting.

College Application preparation and essay writing:
• Taught an SAT-preparation class in HS where I helped students fill out college applications and write essays.
• Twenty plus years in scientific technical editing.

Standardized Placement Skills Testing and tutoring (if necessary)
• Tutor for Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1.
• SAT Preparation.

Preparing for Freshman year, time management and study skills
• College and high school tutor for study skills and time management.

Goal-Setting
• Adept in helping students identify realistic goals and facilitating manageable steps to achieving them.

I have the necessary skills to provide college counseling. These skills include excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines. In addition, I have experience in teaching college and high school and the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population.

Psychology

I have experience in college instruction for General Psychology. In addition, I was a mental health therapist for adolescents and their families.

Study Skills

Being a former Chemistry and SAT-preparation high school teacher, I have spent considerable time helping students learn how to study. This might include improving their study environment, organizational skills, reading comprehension, and even vocabulary skills. With the use of the internet, the ability to get an answer from the homework helper websites has not helped the student understand the "why" of the answer. Improving study skills and concepts of learning can benefit the student.
