About Barbara

I am a highly qualified k-8 math specialist working at a local university teaching teachers how to teach math. This summer I would like to work with students and engage in some great math!

I plan lessons using inquiry based, constructivist methods providing opportunities for concrete, visual and abstract learning. I scaffold material using modeling, guided practice followed by independent practice. I integrate behavior management and materials distribution techniques into my lessons. I studied and practiced collaborative teaching methods, brain research, different teaching modalities, mentoring and coaching techniques in order to integrated the best practices into my philosophy and teaching. Creating a classroom environment where questions are valued, students are trusting, inquiry is essential, challenging preconceived ideas fostered, and collaborating is guided are essential to my philosophy. I feel that in order for teachers to learn to practice teaching in this manner they first have to experience it and observe the results.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed teacher for K-8 Regular and Special Education with a Doctorate in Education Curriculum and Instruction. I teach at George Mason University in the Math Education Leadership program training teachers to be math specialists. I was a math coach for seven years and have also taught in k-8 classrooms since 1986.
