Hello Students and Parents,

I have tutored adults in ESL and children in language arts for eleven years. I taught elementary school for six years in both public schools and a private Christian school before becoming a stay-at-home mom. I have five children that I homeschool. I have a masters degree in elementary education with an endorsement to teach English as a Second Language to kindergarten through adult students. I taught English as a Second Language to children and adults in Colombia, South America, for two months. I have experience working with gifted students, students with learning disabilities, ADD, Asperger's, and other special learning needs. As an experienced teacher, I understand that there are many factors that can affect a student's ability to learn. When tutoring, I first identify the student's needs, learning style, strengths, and areas that are hindering progress. With this information tutoring sessions are more effective. I look forward to helping you meet your goals through tutoring.

Reading

As a first and third grade teacher I taught students who struggled to learn how to read as well as those who were reading well above their grade level. I begin reading instruction by evaluating the specific areas a student may struggle with such as blending phonemes or comprehending plot in a story. Then instruction is targeted to those areas that a student does not understand or is weak in. Once the weaknesses are addressed, we can focus on developing your child's reading ability, confidence, and enjoyment. I use an Orton-Gillingham based program called All About Reading. It is a multi-sensory program that has been shown to help students with learning disabilities such as Dyslexia.

ADHD,

ADHD

During my six years as an elementary school teacher I taught several students with ADD/ADHD. The effects on their learning varied with each student. Some had difficulty with certain subjects, some with testing, and others with whole group instruction. When tutoring students with ADHD I first determine how it affects their learning in the classroom environment. Then we develop a plan to help them be successful at school.

Special Needs

I taught elementary school for six years. Each year I taught students with special needs that were in the inclusion classroom or in the process of being identified for an IEP. I have taught students with dysgraphia, learning disabilities, receptive and articulation speech difficulties, ADHD, developmental delays, and mental retardation. My graduate coursework included a class about identifying and correcting reading difficulties in students with special needs. I also taught swimming in a therapeutic recreation program with children and adults that had autism, mental retardation, hearing loss, and who were nonverbal.

Great teacher!!!

I've been working with Sasha for over six months now and the improvement in my English is amazing. Her experience as a teacher has been very important in identifying my difficulties. Her effort to pursue exercises with topics related to my daily life has certainly made the classes more dynamic and more fruitful. She has great teaching methods and is always willing to help. If you're looking to improve your English, whether it's writing, listening or even reducing your accent, I'm sure Sasha can help you.

Highly recommend!

Even tough I am pretty fluent English speaker, I decided to study with a private teacher, because I felt the lack of understanding of local words and expressions when I spoke to natives. Sasha helped me a lot! She is a patient listener and always could find the right word to express my thought, especially in those situations when direct translation from my native language to English does not exist. I felt very comfortable during our lessons, Sasha is funny and easy-going! She also prepared interesting idioms and "American-style" expressions for me. It was invaluable for learning those parts of English vocabulary, which you may only pick up by actually living in America all your life. Thank you, Sasha!
