Bio

My teacher handed me the Iliad when I was fourteen, and I hated it. Eight years and two full tours of the Great Books later, I had learned to like the Western Canon but not how to understand or study it. I still felt like a person at a feast with a stuffy nose. Then I got hired to write Literature class plans and suddenly there was no more "try." What happened next was stranger than fiction, but that's a story I'll save for later.

For now, can you relate to my experience? Maybe they...

Maybe they keep telling you "this book is delicious!" but mostly you can't taste it? Or perhaps it seems amazing to you too, but you can't ever get a good grade because you don't know how to explain what you're tasting? Or might you wish that somebody would give you a way to talk about books that doesn't have to begin with your feelings and end with Human Experience? If so, contact me.

I have completed three full tours of the Western Canon and World Literature, as well as two full tours of Western and World History, Government Studies, Religion, and Philosophy. I am also the sole author of a textbook on literature that is presently being used by thousands of high school students around the world. History is my favorite subject. I've taught hundreds of students from kindergarten through adult (and some adult teachers), both online and in local classrooms. Maybe all that sounds impressive, but it is important just because of this: it puts me in a good position to serve you.

I want to understand your goals and then craft lessons that will suit your needs. The humanities are hard but worthwhile subjects. I'd like to help you master them at least and love them at most.

I have been almost continuously writing and proofing educational materials since leaving college over a decade ago. Reading

I grew up in a reading family--I don't think we ever had fewer than 40 boxes worth of books in our house! Now as an adult I love to share my big vocabulary and love of reading with students of all ages. I teach everything from grammar, spelling, and basic reading to advanced vocabulary, literature, and SAT/ACT reading comprehension. It's my favorite, and my hope is that it can become something my students enjoy too!

I have taught spoken and written English to Indian and Chinese students of all ages, and to American students all over the country. I teach the English elements of SAT and ACT prep, as well as grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, essay composition, creative writing, literature of all kinds, research papers, etc. If it has to do with reading or writing, there is a strong chance that I've taught it!

I have a B.A. in Literature from a private four-year liberal arts college, as well as ten years of experience designing curriculum and teaching in my field at Jr. High through Adult levels. Making the AP Test Look Easy

My son was struggling in AP World History. He understood the basics, but had trouble expressing himself in essays and long answer questions. Christina has worked with him to develop strategies for answering these types of questions. So now, not only does he understand the material he can relay that understanding effectively and in his own words.

excellent tutor

Christina is really a great tutor. My son was struggling with his history assignment and she worked with him and finished the assignment in 2 lessons. My son told me that she is really very smart and her suggestions are very good. Thanks Christina for all your help. Looking forward for future lessons.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor in US History, English writing and ACT preparation

My 11th grader has been using the service from Christina for more than two months and we will continue to use her professional service. For US History, after we used her service for a couple of weeks, my son's history quiz grade increased from below 90 to above 90, and by the end of the semester my son received an A instead of a B. Christina also works with him on English writing and ACT writing as well. We are very happy with her tutoring in three subjects.

Flexible and creative support that produced results

We originally selected Christina to assist Emerson with her writing (specifically essay responses). However, the class that this was really having an effect was her AP History class. Christina's enthusiasm to really dig ito the content with Emerson and creatively approach her tasks and assignments is producing great results. We intend to work with her weekly the rest of the year.

Meaningful Tutoring

Christina is knowledgeable and has a good flow in discussion. Knowing how to manage the time to what's most important and where to breeze over. I especially appreciate her passion and the way she conveys how studying something like Medieival Drama can teach us more about our God and our faith. My daughter found the content to be conveyed in a meaningful way.
