About Elizabeth

I have a lifelong love of the Spanish language which I desire to share with students. Raised with early exposure to Spanish through my mother, who was also my high school Spanish teacher in a private, college preparatory school, I went on to major in Spanish in college and graduated with a 3.6/4.0 GPA. During my junior year abroad in Spain, I acquired near-native fluency which has stayed with me throughout my adult life. Last summer when I traveled to Spain, I was often mistaken for a native.

I have extensive teaching experience: private tutor, all ages and levels, both in person and on line; homeschool class teacher (middle and high school aged); adult community school (enrichment classes); and community college. I have a thorough understanding of Spanish grammar and am committed to helping students "crack the code" of a foreign language. My friendly and positive approach encourages students to believe that they can succeed, and I equip them with the tools to do so through the use of my own materials to supplement the textbooks and curricula used in their schools. Other work settings in which I have used Spanish include: community interpreter for medical, social service and school appointments; administrative positions in international business; in-home worker/intake coordinator for a counseling agency, in which I assisted therapists exclusively with Latino families. I also enjoy translation projects on a variety of subjects, because they are challenging and help me to learn and grow.

I also have bachelor's and master's degrees in music and have taught people of all ages and levels of musical ability. I have experience with a variety of learning styles, both as a Spanish teacher and as a teacher of music - voice, piano and guitar.

This student has to memorize lists of words, which is not going to work for a visual learner. We looked at sale papers on line to name articles of clothing and drew stick figure diagrams to label parts of the body. Teenagers need to know that what they are learning in class might actually be used in real life one day when they are traveling in a foreign country!

"Great Tutor"

This student wanted a head start on Spanish 3 during the summer. We started with commands, both polite and familiar forms, so that when I introduced the subjunctive and its uses, he already knew all the endings. This sequence worked very well with this student. Since I have not had a call for help in the past few months, I guess he is doing well in Spanish 3!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music History

I have a Bachelor of Music degree which included four semesters of Music History:
Renaissance to Baroque; Classical; Romantic; and Twentieth Century. I received A's and B's in all of them. I have Master of Music degree which included two semesters of Choral Literature, spanning about 500 years. I taught two semesters of Introduction to Music Appreciation and a music history survey course at the Community College of RI.

Music Theory

I have a Bachelor's degree summa cum laude in Music and a Master's degree in Music, both from Westminster Choir College of Rider University. I have many years of experience as a teacher and director. In my current position, I teach all levels of piano, in which I incorporate music theory into every lesson.

Piano

I studied piano privately for ten years, and then received a bachelor of music degree with a concentration in organ. I have been employed as a church choir director/organist/pianist for many years and I accompany my own rehearsals. I hold the Service Playing Certificate of the American Guild of Organists. Currently , I teach private piano lessons for two local community music schools.

Spanish

I have tutored all levels of Spanish for many years and am very familiar with the points of grammar that give students the most trouble. I help students build their confidence in learning the language by tapping into their learning styles. My bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Literature included a year abroad in Madrid, Spain.

Voice (Music)

I have a Bachelor's degree in Church Music with a minor in voice. Relevant coursework includes Vocal Pedagogy, in which I acquired a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the voice; Singers' Diction, in which I was taught the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which enables me to coach singers in a variety of foreign languages; Children's and Youth Choirs, which prepared me to work with young voices. I have a Master's degree in Choral Conducting which included Graded Vocal Methods. I have 30 years of experience as a choral director, vocal coach and voice teacher and am currently on the faculty of two local music schools.
