About David

I became a certified ESL instructor in 2013, and tutored privately/assisted with conversation classes in Charlottesville before relocating to Sterling, VA, where I now work with two students through WyzAnt. My primary training is as a pianist/organist, and I have extensive teaching experience (both private lessons and college classroom instruction) with students aged 5-75. I enjoy encouraging students in both disciplines; while the subject matter is different, the teaching process requires the same elements of patience, support, affirmation and positive rapport.

Tutoring can be arranged at nearby library, or some other convenient public location in the area. I am open to some travel, as well as the possibility of online tutoring.

In addition, I teach piano at two local music schools, and would be happy to add you to my roster. It's never too late to start...

I am enjoying my work with students in the Loudoun/Fairfax County area!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music, which included courses to develop my own ear training. As a choral accompanist, I actively listen for the sections that need help with their parts. I have many years of experience as a private and group music instructor, and have both the skills and patience to help people learn.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a TESOL certificate from the International TEFL and TESOL Training, and have tutored privately and assisted in English conversation classes. Since I am also trained as a musician, my prior work experience has included a great deal of private and classroom piano teaching; though it is a different subject matter, all successful teaching draws on the same foundation of support, encouragement and affirmation. I am a very patient person, and enjoy teaching motivated students of all ages.

General Music

I have both bachelor's and master's degrees in music, which included a broad range of coursework in theory, sight singing, choral and keyboard music, music history. I have been active as an accompanist for many years and have worked with choirs, singers and all kinds of instrumentalists. This work has given me broad knowledge of many styles of music. I currently teach private and group piano for children and adults.

Music History

I have bachelor's and master's degrees in music, which included music history survey courses in all the major periods of music: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th century. I have also had coursework in piano and organ literature. As an active choral, vocal and instrumental accompanist, I have performed music of every era.
