About Bethany

I am currently a Latin teacher with Fairfax County Public Schools and I have been teaching Latin in FCPS for more than 5 years. I actually grew up in Northern Virginia and graduated from Park View High School in Loudoun County, myself. Right now, I am pursuing a Master's Degree in Classics (Latin) through the University of Florida online distance program.

I pride myself on creative and adaptive teaching, flexible lesson plans, and multiple approaches to students with various diverse learning needs. As a tutor, I seek first to understand where the student is and what the student needs before I try to teach or review any material. Sometimes drill practice is necessary, and sometimes drill practice is the last thing a student needs, but it ultimately comes down to each individual student.

I prefer to work with students ages 13 and up, and I prefer to tutor online or in public places, such as a Panera, Starbucks, or library. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions or concerns.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I can help guide any student who wishes to make a study of Classics, as in the History, Culture, Mythology, and Language of the Romans and the Greeks.

Grammar

I can help any student develop his or her understanding and application of English grammar to develop better writing and better reading.

Greek

I studied Ancient Greek as part of my undergraduate work and have recently refreshed my Ancient Greek through my current graduate work in Classics. I therefore feel qualified to help beginning students learn to read and translate Ancient Greek work by such authors as Plato and Homer.

Latin

I can help any Latin student with reading techniques, translation skills, vocabulary memorization, grammar charts, keeping up with regular school lessons, learning the Latin Language from scratch, or refreshing after a long break from a study of Latin.

Microsoft Word

I work with Microsoft Word on a regular basis, creating worksheets, documents, flyers, research papers with footnotes and end notes, and tests and quizzes for the classes I teach. I believe Microsoft Word is best learned through practice and experience, so I would approach tutoring in this subject by guiding the student through creating different kinds of documents with different kinds of formatting.

Proofreading

I can help any student develop better proofreading skills so that he or she can self-edit more effectively. Alternatively, I am also available for individual sessions to proofread documents for a student and provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Reading

I can help any student develop better and more effective reading habit and reading skills.

Writing

I can help any student develop better and more effective writing habits and writing skills.

Good, steady tutor

Bethany knows her Latin and does a good job teaching it. She is very patient and is good at keeping my teenage boy on task.
