About Janny

I came to the U.S. when I was eleven years old and did not speak any English. Even at that age, I quickly realized that I'd have to learn the language fast if I wanted to do well in this country. I hated not knowing what people were saying and wondering if they were talking about me, but mostly, I hated not being able to say what I needed to say. I can still hear in my head the first words I ever said out loud to a stranger: "Gimme the ball!". I yelled this out to a boy who was playing near me in the P.E. field of my elementary school. He had our ball and wouldn't give it back. I remember being nervous because I didn't want to say it wrong and I didn't want the other kids to make fun of me either. However, I remember being more upset than scared, because my friends and I couldn't continue playing and having fun. It was at that moment that I realized how important being able to communicate with others truly is.

I have been blessed with the ability to teach language in a simple and memorable way. I want to help people learn Spanish or English to connect with others whenever they need or want- whether it is to "ask for the ball", to "pass the ball", or to just "play ball".

How am I qualified to teach? Great question!

I'm certified to teach K-12 Spanish and English (ESL/ESOL) by the Department of Education of Virginia & Colorado. (I've also passed WyzAnt's qualifications tests for teaching both Spanish and English (ESL)- woohoo!) I've taught English and Spanish for about 10 years now, working with over 1,300 students of diverse backgrounds, ages 2-70, but mostly young adults 13-19. I've studied Second Language Learning at the university graduate level and also daily when I prepare to teach vocabulary, grammar, and culture to my students. I know how the languages work! I was born in Cuba, raised in the U.S., and I've traveled to Spain, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Belize, and Honduras. I have also lived in many diverse areas of the U.S. like Miami, Denver, and Washington D.C. and have been to many places in the U.S. such as New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, which allowed me the opportunity to be exposed to English language and American culture. I'm very familiar with Hispanic and American culture as well as Spanish and English language structure having had so much interaction with people from all of these places.

What's my teaching style? Another great question!

Fun, memorable, and creative! Otherwise, it doesn't work. People can't learn if you overwhelm them with tons of info, so you must pace things just right to help them feel capable and motivated. I incorporate games, music, competition, and real-life scenarios to get people to really learn the language. I can truly relate to my students because I came to the U.S. at age 11 and had to learn a new language myself- I've walked a mile in their shoes. I put myself in my students' place and ask myself, "Would I have liked this when I was learning language?". If the answer is no, then they probably won't like it either.

Learning a new language is easier than you think. Let me show you!

I'll help you quickly learn and feel confident in your skills so you can start using the language right away! YOU CAN DOOOO ITTTTTT :D

For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
