My love of teaching comes from a desire to learn and assist others in their pursuit of knowledge and success. I hold a BA in Political Science and German, as well as a MA in International Relations. I specialize in all aspects of English language arts, including SAT Reading and Writing preparation. I am a certified military linguist in German and have a B2 European Standard rating. I homeschooled my two sons for eight years, beginning in 5th and 7th grade, and they are now entering college for their sophomore and senior years. In addition to teaching my own children, I was also a Cub Scout den leader, a Boy Scout merit badge counselor, and a co-ed youth soccer coach.
As a homeschool teacher and volunteer with youth, I know that every student has unique needs and strengths. I strive to make each individual feel capable and competent to learn.
I value the time of others. I will always be punctual for a lesson and thus ask my students to be ready and prepared to learn. I have a 24 hr. cancellation policy, but can offer makeup classes if warranted.

Doris has been a great help to my son in English and Writing for the SAT and for his English class. She was able to increase his SAT by over 200 points for an unbeatable rate. She is very dedicated to the students and is the most organized person I know. After each lesson she sent me in detail what they covered and his homework assignment. I would highly recommend her to anybody who needs help in English and writing.
We have just had our first session with Doris and could not be happier with her, her knowledge and connection with our child. Doris was on time and has been in touch with us to confirm our next session. She assigned homework which is good for our child to keep up with the learning.
Doris is helping our high school senior write his college app essays. She's doing s good job eliciting his thoughts and helping him to think harder about how to shape his messages. He enjoys working with her and it is helping me as the parent to back off a little bit.
Mrs.C didn't waste anytime getting into things and I already feel better prepared when I left just after the first session and even though I gave her a small time frame before the exam she has already given me a lot more confidence
Doris not only works with my son to identify his weaker areas, she also communicates with his teacher to make sure assignments are covered. She also has him go through the assignment to make sure that he has a clear understanding of what is expected.
Doris helped me to think about ways to structure my paper. She also helped me with connecting the recommended readings to the external resources to be used as examples for the paper. Lastly, she helped me understand some of the articles for the paper.
She is a nice person, she listens to one's needs, and she is always ready to give a helping hand. My kids really like her. They like her tutoring.
My daughter is heading to Germany soon, and Doris was very flexible to work with our schedule. She tailored the lessons to just what my daughter needed. I certainly recommend her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My undergraduate degree from Susquehanna University is in Political Science and I graduated magna cum laude with departmental and university honors. My Master's degree from American University is in a related field, International Relations. The degree required two fields of study which for me were US foreign policy and Western Europe. Foreign policy has an inherent overlap with political science as does learning about the political policies of a particular region.
My older homeschooled son took AP government & politics so I am familiar with that subject content. I taught my younger son American Government and he also took AP Comparative Government.
