Good day. I tutor both test prep and school subjects. I am a semi-retired father of five grown children who enjoys teaching and the excitement of learning I gain with my students, teaching youngsters and young adults how to think and achieve. My tutoring strength comes from my career credentials and academics with formal education in engineering and applied science and career positions in business, government and writing, equally strong in math (800 SAT) and language skills (792). I have written for magazines, journals, study reports and weekly featured newspaper columns. I’m equally at home with left and right-brained math and verbal subjects. Academics include a BS from Caltech, MS from University of Southern California, grad studies at Rensselaer, professional jobs with Lockheed, think tanks, congress and executive office. (And with five kids through college and grad schools, I have the capacity to act as somewhat of a guidance counselor resource for your college and career considerations.)
Approach: I have tutored well over two hundred students, individually and in classes for other established companies for many years in SAT prep and school work. We choose mutually convenient locations, either at your home or nearest library. I believe in conducting structured courses with weekly sessions to thoroughly prepare either for an aptitude test like the SAT, or to master a school subject, like geometry or reading/English. Yes, we can also do just one-off sessions, which are far less effective but necessary sometimes when that crucial quiz or exam is coming up. With individualized flexibility, and my proficiencies in many math and verbal skills, both, we can tailor exactly what we do to meet the student’s overall needs. My concentration has been with high school students aiming for exceptional scores for college admission in PSAT and SAT (yes, I have tutored a few to get 800s), or that one course they need for their GPA. I have worked with younger junior high school students and will occasionally tutor a younger child.
Sessions & Teaching Approach: Together we scope a particular test objective, or a particular school subject matter class, and work through 6-10 weekly sessions to master the material, fewer if we deal with a narrow class topic. I try not to teach just subject mechanics, but how to THINK about HOW to solve problems generically. That means applying a thinking methodology to math problems and a structured approach to good writing, tactics and strategies. To get enhanced subject matter proficiency, it is important that students develop a sense of confidence. They need to learn to relax, have a sense of control over the test or topic, not suffer brain freeze from nerves and anxiety which robs them of their true potential. I teach specific ways to accomplish that mental deep breathing.
Details: The first thing we need to do is talk with the student and parents. That is essential to gain some appreciation for the student as a person, temperament, personality and best way to generate interest and enthusiasm. Then we will scope the engagement: how many (hourly) sessions; where and when to meet; what resource materials need to be bought, if any (I can get a 30% discount off all books and CDs for you); getting your payment scheme registered with WyzAnt headquarters; then looking forward to some proud work.
My hourly rate, including the WyzAnt overhead fee, is benchmarked at $75/hour, which reflects my senior credentials and experience, as well as travel time and expenses. The fee is somewhat negotiable, depending on near or far locations and multiple students or number of total hours. Cancellation fee is $25 without a 24-hour notification.
I can honestly say there's not a single student out of hundreds I have tutored of whom I cannot say I loved to see their achievement grow, each in their own way. I would hope you might be one more. You have the whole world ahead of you, grab every opportunity to fly. After all, this World is being left in your hands. Think about that. Good day. I tutor both test prep and school subjects. Rate negotiable based on location, travel distance, session duration and multiple students.
Les is helping my daughter with bringing up her SAT scores. She is taking her SAT in a week so I hope time spent will pay off and she will get a boost needed. So far she likes working with Les and appreciates his out-of- the- box perspective.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
