I am a recent college graduate who has been studying and substitute teaching while I apply to a Masters program in secondary education. I have been tutoring/mentoring students since I was 14 when I helped a former teacher of mine at Lynnbrook Elementary. I have since tutored and mentored students of all ages from 7-21 in many different fields. I was a tutor for college level biochemistry and organic chemistry while in college and also taught high school chemistry and biology. My SAT and PSAT scores allowed me to be a National Merit Finalist and I am confident in the strategies and skills needed to do well on these tests. I went to TJ for High School and know the ins and outs of the entrance test for that school as well.
My method of tutoring focuses on helping the student understand the material they are confused with and can work with all types of learners. I apply both skills based and content based tutoring to help students learn the material so that they can not only recall facts, but use their knowledge in a variety of different contexts whether it be word problems, analogies or simple math equations. Joey has tutored my son and my daughter in pre-calc/trig and chemistry for three months. Since they've worked with him, they've improved their understanding of the material substantially, going from C's to solid A's in their classes. My daughter has even become the tutor to everyone else in her chemistry class by sharing the tactics and explanations that Joey has given her. Joey reminds both my kids to plan ahead and works with them so that they are well-prepared for upcoming exams. I highly recommend Joey. I only wish I hadn't waited until halfway through the school year to hire him as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked as a substitute and tutor for elementary students for over half a dozen years. Schools I have worked at include Crestwood Elementary and Lynnbrook elementary in Springfield. I have plenty of patience to help any young child learn the basics so they have a strong foundation to build on.
I have taken both O Chem 1 and 2 and was subsequently placed on my professor's preferred tutor list for future students. I received the highest grade in the class on several of our major exams and received an A in both classes at the end of the semester. I also received an A in the O Chem lab section and graduated with a minor in chemistry.
I have successfully tutored fellow students in sociology while in college and completed a 1000 level class with a grade of an A.
