About Beth

Hello! I am an award-winning teacher in the public school system. I am certified to teach English 6-12. I understand that reading comprehension, writing, and grammar can be overwhelming. Reading and writing are skills. If you aren't successful in English, I can help you get there! I have worked with so many students who claim to "hate" English, but love it by the end of the year. I have worked with all levels from advanced to special education.

I have also taught SAT/ACT Prep for six years. The college boards are tricky tests. Success is as much about test-taking skills, as it is about knowledge. My students average an improvement of 100 points after working with me.

I am personable, patient, and plan engaging lessons. You can't learn if you are bored. I am available weekdays after 4:00 p.m. and on weekends. In the summer, I am available any time!
In addition to experience with all levels of learners, I am known for developing strong, trust-based relationships with my students. I won an award for engaging lesson plans and excellent student rapport. This is the best possible environment for learning.

I believe that every student can learn. It is my job to help you figure out the best way to set you up for success. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work, learn, and grow with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have a B.A. in English from University of Mary Washington. I am an award-winning, certified English teacher. I have taught grades 9-12, as well as SAT and ACT preparatory classes.

Study Skills

As an English teacher (I am certified English 6-12), I teach test taking skills as a way of being successful, not just on assessments, but on the SOL and SAT tests.

Writing

I have spent my entire career working with students who struggle with writing. I use a method that is easy to remember for students who struggle. I have always had a very high SOL pass rate, even while teaching special education students.
