LEARNING is a lifetime exercise and for those who have a passion for learning, it is PURE JOY! And because I truly LOVE to continuously learn, I can safely say that I LOVE to Teach, tutor and coach! Like anything worth having in life, success in academics requires Hard Work and Discipline. With success, comes the reward and the "price" that must be paid; sacrifice, discipline and of course, hard work.
Here's what you need to know about me: English is my favorite subject (especially literature, comprehension and creative writing) but I am skilled and available to help in other areas like Science, some topics in Math, time management skills, basic study skills (or improving existing study skills), test taking skills and History/Social Studies/Geography. I earned an Advanced Studies diploma in High School, meeting and exceeding all the necessary requirements and earning an HONORS GRADUATE certificate. ALL of my core classes (Math, Sciences, Social Studies/History and English) were Honors/Advanced or Gifted and Talented based curricula.
I began my college career as an English major before switching my sophomore year to Finance. My first two years of College I met the requirements for CORE Studies, which included College-level Physical Sciences, Literature/English and Social Studies/History. My academic background firmly supports my ability to provide you TOP-NOTCH services in the areas in which you will need help going forward.
Now, this is where where I come in: I will combine my love for learning with an attention to YOUR details and YOUR future success in mind. We will create a plan for success and walk through it, step-by-step building on each victory, no matter how large or small. I make sure that during every session we have, you will be "pushed" but not to the point of being overwhelmed. And as you would expect, there is always going to be a homework assignment designed to reinforce what we have learned. I strive for excellence. In order to do that, I make sure I ask for lots of feedback in order to improve as needed. Rest assured, I won't bill you for any lesson in which you do not feel completely satisfied.
I am very flexible with my time while we adhere to the 24 hour cancellation policy (I will ALWAYS schedule a makeup session if we have to cancel). I like to be able to focus on what we are doing, so I often choose the nearest library as the place to meet and conduct our sessions, however, I will consider traveling to other places of your choosing so long as it is a quiet, comfortable place to study. I hope to hear from you and I pray we can work together to help you achieve all the success you could want in your academic endeavors. Hello All!

James came in upbeat and went right to it. The kids enjoyed it and so did the adults. We would like to continue.
James is very organized and thoughtful with my son. He's definitely helping my son on how to use his time management with his homework and class assignment. James is very knowledgeable of his subject. I would definitely recommend Mr. C to anyone who needs his assistance.
James hit the ground running with our family beginning with the phone interview. He exhibits an enormous amount of patience and flexibility. He is a good listener and very knowledgeable to support the needs of our 15 year old with regards to the subjects in his “wheel house” and the necessary study and organizational skill improvements we want to achieve. Our son is very comfortable James and looks forward to his tutoring sessions. We've noticed improvement in the first three weeks but realize we are just at the tip of the iceberg. The quality of tutoring is well worth the investment!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my 4 years of High School, I followed the college preparatory, advanced diploma curriculum recommendations for math which included: Algebra 1, Algebra II, Geometry and Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. In college I was required to take College Algebra 101. Given this requirements, i am more than adequately qualified to tutor Algebra 2 and any math below it.
I was an honors student in High School and was enrolled the advanced version of American History my sophomore and junior years, as well as being in advanced Government my senior year. I was immediately hooked on this fascinating study of past events! I also have privately tutored this subject to high school students while I was a junior/senior in college. History is interesting because it allows us to examine events that took place in our past in order to make our present and future a better place and time to live in and pass on to future generations.
I studied the honors level version of astronomy while in High School and in college (as an elective). I tutored high school and junior high students on this subject while I was a junior/senior in college. I absolutely love anything to do with the universe that surrounds us. There is so much we don't know and so much to learn.
While attending college (Hampton University, Division I-AA), played four years of football and during the offseason, I participated in the university intramural basketball program. After graduation and during my 8 years as an officer in the US Army, I played football with the European/American league (while stationed in Germany) and during those offseasons, played basketball with the many leagues the Army had to offer for soldiers. And during that time and after I left the Army, I continued to play both football and basketball as well as coaching in various parks and recreation leagues in CT, SC, NC and here in Virginia.
THE most important qualification I believe for tutoring this subject is a living, breathing relationship with the LORD JESUS CHRIST. I taught Mens Bible studies at my local church for over two years, and I continue to teach Junior High Sunday School. In addition to these time frames, I also have led private Bible studies within our Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg communities.
My background in Biology is linked to my high school course which included, Advanced Biology and Chemistry which gave me an in-depth background in both. I was required to enroll in Physical Science 101 in college which also gave me a deeper understanding of Biology and Chemistry.
I have been playing Chess since Junior High (1982-84), I began teaching elementary students while I was a junior and senior in high school. I also continued to play and teach chess during my enlistment in the United States Army (1993-2001) and I continue to play on my own time and teach chess to middle school and high school students.
During my four years in high school, I was enrolled in Honors/Advanced English each year and I never received lower than a "B". Honors/Advanced English included American and British literature, creative writing and literary analysis. I minored in English while in college and tutored other students during my time in school.
During my high school years I was enrolled in Honors Social Studies/History for all four years of my time there which included detailed curriculum teaching in European History and World History. Also, I was required to take a History course in college which included an entire semester plus of European History.
My college major was in Finance, my Bachelor of Science is in Finance in addition, I spent most of my 12+years as a professional working in industries focused on financial management, budgeting and accounting. This would include federal government agencies, the Dept of Defense agencies and private sector companies. If you need help in this area, you have come to the right place.
My experience/qualifications come from years of practical (playing) experience and coaching.
I played Pop Warner league for about two years, Junior High for two years, Junior Varsity (High School) for two years and Varsity for two years. I walked onto the Hampton University (Division I-AA) football team in the summer of 1988 and played defensive back for 4 years. I graduated from college and played in Europe (Germany) for 3 years and back in the States, played semi-pro football for almost 8 years (as a defensive back). I coached and played with my Army unit flag football teams during my eight years of service, I was a volunteer defensive coach with a high school football team in Connecticut, the Farmville Blue Devils and have coached Youth league football here in Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania Virginia for the last 7 years.
My high school curriculum track (for math) to an advanced studies diploma included, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry and Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. In addition, I was required to take and pass while obtaining my college degree, College Mathematics and Algebra.
I studied the honors/advanced version of this topic in High School and as an officer in the US Army. I gave various presentations to subordinate soldiers during my 8 years of service on the how's and why's of local, state and federal government and politics and how they all interrelate with the military.
I studied the Honors/Advanced version of this topic during all four years of High School and my first two years of college. I also tutored this subject to high school juniors and seniors during my senior year of college. I am very, very familiar and knowledgeable about the various genres of literature: Colonialism, Romantacism, Transcendentalism, the Industrial Age writers/poets, etc. I absolutely love teaching/tutoring this subject.
I was an honors student in High School and took the Advanced version of Biology and Earth Sciences and loved it! I privately tutored Earth Science to high school students (sophomores and juniors) while I was a senior in college. Earth Sciences and Biology have always been intriguing subjects to me; Biology explains all life forms on the planet and how they function and Earth Science explains THE planet and how it functions with it's lifeforms and how we all integrate with the Universe. Earth Science is my absolute favorite, we get to look at the Earth and the Universe and gain a basic understanding how we fit.
I am very qualified to tutor in proofreading. Proofreading is an essential part of English and the creative writing process. It must be done during and at the conclusion of your exercises to reduce or eliminate errors. I went through four years of Honors English and 2 semester of College English, I love the subject of English and I am more that sure that I can assist you on whatever project you have that requires proofreading.
I competed for four years at the varsity level, and earned my varsity letter in track and field. I competed in the following events: the 100m hurdles, the 400m hurdles, the high jump and the triple jump. I was heavily involved in the strength and condition sessions necessary for track and field success and participated in workouts that involved all sprints and middle distance events.
A strong vocabulary is absolutely essential to everyday communication. The same is true for the student studying English in middle school, high school, and beyond. I was an honors student in English for all four years of high school, and I minored in English in college. A deep, strong vocabulary is synonymous with a sound grasp and understanding of English. I have that understanding, and I can more guarantee that I can teach/tutor vocabulary to your student.
I was an honors student in High School and took the Advanced version of World History and like American History, loved it! I also have privately tutored this subject to high school students (sophomores and juniors) while I was a junior/senior in college. World History is extremely fascinating because you get a birds-eye view of past world events, you ask questions about why things happened and then apply those lessons and answers to our present day world situation, thereby impacting our future and giving untold generations the opportunity to do it better.
I was an honors student in High School enrolled in Advanced English classes the entire four years! I also minored in English while in college. I have privately tutored this subject for middle school and senior high school students while I was a junior/senior in college. Creative writing is an absolute must no matter the discipline that is being studied. A person has to be able to communicate his/her thoughts and transmit them from his/her head onto the paper in such a way as to enlighten the reader in way that they haven't seen before. It is no wonder that Reading and Writing integrate so well and have for hundreds of years. I am very passionate about writing and teaching students the "right" way to do so. It is a skill-set that is not going, not until we harness the power to transmit our thoughts via telepathy or until artificial intelligence does it for us. I truly enjoy tutoring this most necessary subject.
