About Philip

Hello, my name is Philip and I am a current Master's student at the online campus of University of Phoenix. I studied criminal justice at George Mason University and I took classes in criminal law, constitutional law, privacy law, controversial legal issues, world history, and psychology. I then obtained a Paralegal certification through George Mason University and an Advanced Paralegal Certification through Virginia Tech. For my certification I had to conduct research in a law library. I took classes in Family, Property, Business, and Intellectual law. I have tutored students in English, history, legal studies, criminal justice and psychology.

I am very patient with my students when I am teaching them. I try to find out what their strong points and where their weak points are upfront. I then try to focus on the weak points so that my students can improve. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from my students and I have helped many successfully pass their classes. Overall, I have about 10 years of tutoring experience in various subjects and I look forward to having you as a student during your educational pursuits!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice from George Mason University and I am currently studyign for a Master's in Criminal Justice through University of Phoenix. I have taken classes in privacy law, tort law, consitutional law, controversial legal issues, and in criminal law. I have been taught by professors with experience on the field such as police officers, a former Army JAG and a former Drug Enforcement Agency agent. I have experience tutoring clients in classes such as an intorduction to Criminal Justice as well as more advanced courses.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary students in institutions, such as the Huntington Learning Center and the Tutoring Center, where I taught reading skills, writing skills, social studies and elementary math. I have dealt with elementary students with good and bad behavioral skills, thus I had to enforce established rules with the children. I have worked with children to keep their interest ongoing during the session so that they could learn as much as possible during the session.

Social Studies

I am qualified to tutor in social studies because I taught the subject for a decade. I have taught elementary, middle school and high school students Virginia history. In addition, I have taught students geography and U.S. history facts that are tied to social studies.

Study Skills

I have various study skills that I have exemplified for students. Usually for assignments and tests that require memorization I utilize index cards for the students. I ask students questions related to the materials they are learning about so that they can show me their interpretations of the facts that they are learning.
In addition to assisting students with their study skills in person, I discuss with them ways to advance their study skills on their own. First, I encourage students to always take notes. Secondly, I encourage students to write questions about the subject that they are learning about. Lastly, I teach students ways to find answers to questions that they do not yet know the answers for.

Track & Field

In high school I was a junior varsity member of my track team. For my track team, I did both short distance and long distance events. I did baton transfers in the hurtles, 100 meter, 400 meter and 800 meter sprint events. I also did the competitive mile run.
