Hi, my name is Jennifer S. and I am a certified teacher with a master's degree in Special Education and Art Education. I have taught children of all ages and many children with special needs including children with autism and learning disabilities. I recently moved here from upstate New York where I spent the last 5 years tutoring elementary school students in reading, writing, spelling and math, and art. One of my strengths as a teacher is getting to know each student and understanding what their individual needs are. My art background helps me add a little creativity which often enhances learning and motivation in students. I am flexible and enjoy challenges and I realize that just as every student is an individual, so is each student's circumstances and needs. I have worked closely with parents and like to keep communication ongoing to meet both the child's goals and the parents' expectations. I look forward to meeting your child and helping them achieve success in school! Hi, my name is Jennifer S. and I am a certified teacher with a master's degree in Special Education and Art Education. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art and Art education. Part of my degree required classes in art history. I am a permanently certified Art teacher and have used art history in lessons with students.
I have tutored other students in Reading and worked with students in elementary school and have had success in helping them improve their reading levels, become more motivated readers, and feel more confident about reading. I use a variety of reading materials with students. I use strategies such as word "chunking," context clues, and sight word strategies to help students learn and retain new words and improve their reading skills.
I am certified to teach students with special needs in grades K-12. I have experience with students with special needs of all ages and grade levels.
