About Susan

My life has always included a love of and a lot of math and science. I taught elementary, middle and high school in Peoria, Illinois and Roanoke, Virginia for 35 years, retiring in 2006. My classes included seventh grade general science, Physical science, Chemistry, Applied Physical science, Physics, and Earth Science for about 6000 students in grades 6- 12. I have degrees and certifications in chemistry, general science (earth science) and physics from Longwood College and Virginia Tech in Virginia. I hold several "Teacher of the Year " awards from the National Chemical Society, Westinghouse Society and American Acoustical Society. I have written curricula for Roanoke City Schools in Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Applied Physical Science and Earth Science for 18 years. After I retired, I was asked to teach classes in Earth Science and Astronomy for Roanoke City schools, William Fleming High School for several semesters. Two years ago, I was called back to finish out a chemistry teacher's classes from March- June and I have been a chemistry tutor at Fleming High school a number of times, including 29 hours a week from November,2015- May 2016. I have had a thriving private tutoring program for 25 years. This is my passion!

In my private tutoring programs, I have shown an excellent knowledge of teaching math as a separate subject because I use so much math in both Chemistry and Physics. I am especially skilled in teaching the use of dimensional analysis in setting up and solving word problems. I am an expert in "sig figs", using rules correctly and have tutored all the maths on ASVAB and the 2 math parts of SAT tests many times, including the newer editions. I have tutored in college math as well.

I have a very strong background in Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science, which includes geology. My college and graduate work has reflected work in these fields with national NSTA grants at Virginia Tech and Virginia Military Institute as part of my graduate study in Curriculum and Instruction. I developed Elementary Science Festivals for Roanoke City schools as well as participating/ judging in city, regional, and state Science Fairs in Illinois and Virginia. I was the Science Tutor for William Fleming High from November, 2015- May, 2016, working 29 hours a week at the school. I specialized in Chemistry and Earth Science. I have tutored many times in High School Physics.

Because I have continued to enjoy working with students, I came out of retirement last year because I knew that my ability to be a great teacher in science has not left me, and I can now concentrate on my students and their individual needs. I work with my students, at whichever point of understanding they find themselves. One student left a tutoring session last spring with this remark: "When are you coming back to full time teaching? You use words that I can understand." I laughed and said "Never!" Please let me help you learn your science with a new passion yourself.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SOL

In Virginia, I taught and tutored Sols in Chemistry and in Earth Science beginning in 1998. I retired in 2006 and since that time, I have been called back by Roanoke City Public schools nearly every year for both sub teaching and tutoring in Chemistry and Earth Science. In March- June, 2015, I took over a chemistry teacher's SOL classes when she became ill. I then became the Science tutor for 29 hours a week for the 2015-2016 school year for chemistry and Earth Science at William Fleming High School, Roanoke, Va. I have also tutored in Physical Science SOLs in my private tutoring for over 10 years.
