About David

I have been married for over 25 years and have two adult children. I am a recent graduate of Liberty University with an Associate of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (coursework in Psychology, Philosophy, Education and Technology) and a Bachelor of Science in Religion.

I am a life-long learner with a very strong interest in helping others’ achieve their education goals. I currently teach theology and bible studies to a wide range of ages and education levels. I have the tendency to dissect and analyze information, striving to learn the “why and how” rather than being content learning facts.

I have taught test preparation courses for professional certification and have coursework in education, but I am not a professional educator, and my tutoring experience is limited to the interactions that have been arranged through Wyzant.

Thus, I am learning and gaining experience alongside the learners with whom I tutor. I simply have a passion for learning and teaching others.

My approach to teaching reaches beyond the subject matter and empowers the student to learn more effectively by focusing on obtaining knowledge rather than simply memorizing facts. This creates a more functional learning experience that evolves alongside technology and information, rather than committing facts to memory that may soon be obsolete.

My interest in teaching ESL began during a recent missionary trip to Guatemala, I developed a strong interest in helping teach functional English. My experience there was primarily with children that spoke a Mayan dialect, very little Spanish and no English. Currently, I am regularly working with Syrian refugees and children from Haiti at a local church.

My approach is very simple: Adapt to the needs of the learner rather than employing a bland, rigid approach to learning English. It is important to me to enable learners to become functionally literate quickly before following with grammar and vocabulary – focusing on how it relates to their individual needs rather than expecting the same lesson content to be relative to everyone. Building relationships and catering to the needs of the learner is very important to me.

It may sound strange, but I actually enjoy taking tests! Rather than viewing them as burdens, I like to think of them as opportunities to prove how much I have learned about a topic. Besides focusing on the subject matter alone, I also teach study techniques and test-taking strategies. I have experience with standardized tests, including ASVAB, FCC, GED, law enforcement, real estate and trade certifications.

My experiences and interests in technology are fairly diverse. I am most interested in teaching basic-to-intermediate PC skills, Excel, Word and PowerPoint, but will also consider topics such as: PC upgrades and repairs; image, video and sound editing; basic design and programming (including WordPress); 3D modeling/drafting and 3D printing!

Thanks for your time and interest!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Religion

I am a recent graduate of Liberty University with a Bachelor of Science in Religion, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 3.96 GPA.
