Guilford College (Spanish)
As a former Spanish teacher, I am well versed in the mechanics of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and composition. These are an important part of learning the language -- but to me, the most essential ingredient in learning Spanish is to make it come alive! Conjugating endless lists of verbs is boring, but being able to communicate with people in a second language is enormously satisfying and enjoyable. I will help you learn the basics and then assist you in developing your fluency so that you can actually carry on a conversation with a Spanish speaking person. I have lived and travelled in Mexico and have a special fondness for Mexican culture (including their awesome food). Let me help you open the door to Spanish fluency! Mrs. Karen has been working with my son for a month and he really looks forward to their lessons (and his grades are improving). She is very patient and always willing to work with our busy schedule. I am so glad to have found her!
Karen is very patient and makes my son feel comfortable enough to have conversations with her in Spanish. After just a few lessons, his Spanish is already improving.
I have twin girls she is helping in Spanish III and so far one has improved in her first test after two meetings with Karen. The girls like her and understand her so far. Karen's communication has been great!
Thank you, Donna! It is a pleasure working with your daughters. They are very motivated students with a great work ethic. Thanks for the opportunity to help them bring up their grades in Spanish III.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In my previous tutoring work, I have taught a number of students with various disabilities, including Aspergers. I am extremely patient and good at devising alternative approaches to help students grasp material they may be struggling to understand. Many people with Aspergers are very literal thinkers, so it can be helpful to "translate" academic material into pictures or tactile objects that they can touch and feel.
On a personal note, I am the parent of a child with high functioning autism, so I have ample experience with behavior management techniques. It is often necessary to give frequent breaks, offer copious positive feedback, patiently redirect the student's attention to the task at hand, and provide sensory activities to help the student stay focused.
I look forward to helping your child with Aspergers syndrome improve his/her academic performance. Please feel free to contact me to discuss your child's needs. Thank you!
I hold a Master of Divinity degree from the Claremont School of Theology and served as a pastor for several years. I am quite familiar with Biblical studies and would enjoy the opportunity to share my knowledge. I can also conduct Bible classes in Spanish.
I worked for a private tutoring company for three years, helping elementary students complete their homework assignments and develop good study habits. In addition, I worked for two years as a high school Spanish teacher. Given my background in liberal arts, I have broad knowledge of many subjects and am equipped to help students with their assignments in math, science, social studies, English, or electives.
When I was in high school, I scored in the 700's on my SAT's, and in college, I was placed in the Honors English class. I have always been very strong in composition and vocabulary, and enjoy sharing my love of language with my students. Learning proper English grammar, spelling, composition, and pronunciation is essential to building a successful career in any field.
I have always enjoyed meeting and interacting with people of many different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. I have been learning a second language (Spanish) since I was 11 years old, so I understand how frustrating it is when you struggle to communicate your thoughts but don't have the vocabulary to express yourself. I have tremendous respect for those learning English as a Second Language, because English is full of irregular verbs and inconsistent patterns of grammar and pronunciation!
I am a very patient teacher, using the natural conversational approach to learning so that my students develop an "ear" for the language rather than memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules. I have been a classroom teacher and a private tutor for several years, and I love to see students gain confidence as they learn new skills. Let me help you develop your listening comprehension and improve your ability to speak, read, and write English fluently!
I taught a grammar tutorial at a private high school for two years. I enjoy teaching my students how to construct a proper sentence, avoid common grammatical mistakes, and master the complexities of English.
I spent three years working as a legal editor, a job that required an enormous amount of proofreading. I have also helped many students at various levels edit their compositions. I have a great eye for typos and grammatical errors.
I first started studying Spanish in the 1970's and have continued to build my fluency for nearly 40 years. I've been a Spanish teacher and have used the language on a daily basis in a number of other jobs (ministry, sales, editing, mortgage loan officer). I'm very comfortable conversing in Spanish and have a strong command of grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context. Most importantly, I love teaching and try to make it engaging and enjoyable.
I worked with several special needs children in a tutoring company in California. In addition, I am the parent of a special needs child who is now in middle school. I have helped him with his learning challenges and would welcome the opportunity to assist other students with special needs.
Throughout high school and college, I was in honors level English classes. I scored in the high 700's on my verbal SAT exam and consistently received very positive feedback from all my professors about my writing skills. In my professional work, I have authored many grant proposals, research studies, and other written documentation.
In addition to English, I am fluent in Spanish and speak/read a smattering of German and French. I love language and am a passionate advocate of learning proper grammar, syntax, and spelling so that an individual is free to express himself or herself with fluency and ease.
