I home-schooled my legally blind son from the sixth grade until he graduated and passed his GED, He scored in the top seventy-five percentile, or higher in all categories, except Math skill which he scored in the fifty-eighth percentile. Whether it was an adult or a child that I have tutored in the past, I have always searched out their special interests, such as sports, animals, in the case of my son, or other things and incorporated them into my lesson plans. I use mnemonic devices, such as FANBOYS, for the joining of independent clauses with conjunctions. For, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. The next semester I told the professor what I had done and the next higher course had another thirty question events test, he suggested to his weaker students that they should seek my help. Again, my son and I scored a perfect score and twelve others in our class, that studied with us, received a eighty-five or better on the test. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
