I am a semi-retired educator with over 20 years of experience in elementary education. I have tutored students from ages 5 to 15 in all academic core content areas. However, what I most enjoy is helping students with disabilities or challenges to their learning, this is what got me into tutoring. To me, helping students learn is like being a detective, each student has their own unique learning style and way of becoming engaged in the learning process. Finding that engagement is key to the success of the student.
I spent 13 years in the classroom as a 5th-grade teacher, teaching math, science, language arts, and social studies. I have taught in gifted and talented programs as well as with ESL students and children with organizational and attentional challenges. I also worked as an administrator and served as an advocate with special education law and the IEP process. I have chaired child-study commitees and eligibility meetings and have a strong working knowledge of the special education process in public schools. I believe that all children should be heard and given the opportunity to meet or exceed their abilities.

Math is a language that at times is unfamiliar and unknown to students. By using a hands-on, concrete approach, math can be understood conceptually. Math is the most fun for students when it takes the form of games and activities which engages them and makes math something they want to participate in. This is the approach I take when helping students learn everything from basic times tables to multi-step word problems.

I have worked with ESL students (English as a Second Language) who spoke or wrote very little English. Some of my greatest success stories are with these students, helping them fill in gaps in their learning in everything from phonics to higher-order thinking and comprehension to have them reading on grade level after intensive remediation. I believe that children should not only be taught how to read, but also how their own mind works in learning how reading works. Unlike speaking, reading is a much more abstract and complex task that must be taught explicitly, it does not often come naturally to young children, but it can be taught in a way that makes reading seem natural once the skills of reading are mastered.

I have worked with students with learning disabilities and have extensive experience with children who have difficulty with organization and impulse control. I can help parents organize their child's school life so there is less stress at the home and dinner table by providing research-based techniques and skills that assist in learning all subjects. In addition, I have a working knowledge of the IEP process and how services are provided in schools, I can assist in the home in supplementing the strategies and skills developed in the school, as well as provide perspective on the best practices for your son or daughter.

Being part of someone successfully learning something that they may struggle with is one of the most rewarding experiences for both the student and the teacher. I look forward to working with you and your family to help you be successful in all that you do academically in your school and at home. Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught all core academic subjects (language arts, social studies, science and math) in public and private schools. I have taught ESL students and students with disabilities how to read. In addition, my favorite subject to teach was math because when I was a student myself, no one ever explained the why and how of how math works, which as an educator I have found essential to conceptual understanding. I like to use games and real-life hands-on experiences to teach all subjects and I believe that when learning is fun, students are engaged.

In my 20 years working of experience with students with a variety of learning disabilities and challenges including English as a Second Langauge Learners, students with ADHD and ADD, and reading and math learning disabilities, I have learned that it is possible for families and children to thrive together when completing academic tasks. These students have ranged in age from 5 to 15. I also specialize in tailoring strategies related to organization, creating the best learning environment at home, and enabling parents to provide support without power struggles and frustration about work not done. Finally, I have helped to create and administer IEPs in public schools and can provide support regarding all aspects of this process.
