About Ali

I know first hand how difficult it can be to acknowledge that a tutor is necessary. During a very difficult period in my undergraduate education at a large public university I found myself in a situation where I could not complete the class without the extra supports provided by a tutor.

In the past I tutored an ESL adult student over the summer. We worked extensively on reading and writing skills using a variety of media and literature resources. I have also tutored several students with learning disabilities.

In December I will complete my Masters degree in Adult Education. My specific area of interest is developing alternative methods of teaching. An example of this is community based teaching. It is easy to read a poem that is laid out in a book. However, developing a further meaning of that poem could involve going and hearing that piece read aloud at a library or coffee shop event. I enjoy creating an environment where a student can learn using whatever supports are necessary for the student to achieve success.

I loved my English curriculum in high school and college. I have been surrounded by books and the arts since childhood. I see beyond what is in print; I have a vivid imagination and as an artist I have used my knowledge of poetry and literature in many of the pieces I have designed. I do not believe in rote memorization. However, I do believe in helping my students discover their interpretation of whatever subject we are studying. I have learned that we retain more of what we study when we apply it to our daily lives and the environment around us.

My experience with family members matches my professional experience with ADD and/or with the hyperactivity component. I have helped individuals learn to use coping mechanisms such as organizational skills to be able to complete academic tasks.

If you are looking for a fun and invigorating tutor experience then I am your person. I am available most afternoons and evenings, plus some weekends.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I spent my undergraduate years fine tuning my grammar skills and learning proper punctuation. Extensive writing and research projects served me well and provided me with a steady grammar background.

Literature

I've done extensive reading for both my undergraduate and graduate studies. Literature is not confined to stories, fiction, and non-fiction. Literature takes on many different forms that includes research, journal articles, and peer revisions. I am familiar with all of these areas.

Proofreading

Proofreading has been a part of my reading and writing skills for many years. In high school I offered to proofread many of my classmates work before they turned it in. In college I have spent countless hours proofreading and honing in on my editing skills for other people.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a subject area that has come naturally to me since I was a kid. I've always had an issue with learning numbers and math but the letters of the alphabet and vocabulary have somehow made sense to me for quite some time. I have an extensive vocabulary and have learned how to become an excellent speller.

Writing

Writing overall is both a hobby and a habit for me. It is one of my passions in life and I enjoy every aspect of writing. I find that I express myself best in the written word and have assisted many people with figuring out how they can be the best writer.
