About Rebecca Anne

Hello! I am very excited to begin or help further your musical or performance goals, so thank you for reading on! I am a professional vocalist and theater artist with over 15 years experience both teaching and working professionally in central and northern Virginia. With a degree in vocal music, and a focus in piano technique and secondary education, I have enjoyed teaching and coaching artists of all ages and skill levels.

My teaching career started in 2001 in Stafford, VA, where I taught chorus, show choir and dance in Stafford County Public schools. There I learned that not all students learn and respond to learning in the same way, and developed a teaching strategy and philosophy that adapts and caters to each students' goals, needs and specific abilities. In 2006 I moved to Richmond, VA, and began a professional acting and singing career. Through experiences with both large house professional theaters like Firehouse Theatre and Richmond Shakespeare (now Quill Theatre) and smaller, independent companies like Nightlight Collective and Free Jambalaya Productions I have received acclaim in and learned so much about the "business". I have used that experience to further my craft as a teaching artist, working for many years as a freelance teacher with institutions like Drama Kids International, Little People's Creative Workshop, the School for the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community (SPARC) and for the Festival Young Company of Quill Theatre. I have enjoyed watching my students go on to success in local and national film, stage and professional music careers, and currently coach in a wonderful private vocal, piano and acting instructional space at a Music Academy in Midlothian. So come and sing with me! Let's make some art together! My lines of communication are always open and I am excited to help you achieve your dreams, or to help you land that next big role!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have 15 years of experience teaching vocal music and piano in both a large classroom settings and through private instruction. That includes 4 years as a choral director in Stafford County public schools after graduating from Mary Washington College in 2002 with a degree in the same. My teaching style for vocal music pedagogy includes kinesthetic and sensory techniques that improve retention and effectiveness. I am skilled in music theory and composition as well, and have worked professionally as a singer song writer and studio musician for 5 years.

Piano

I began classical piano instruction at age 6 with a private tutor and continued training through my college years. While in college, I was the musical director and pianist for the Baptist Student union and worked as an accompanist in my local church. After college I worked as a choral director and accompanist for middle and high schools around Stafford county. Since 2006 I have been working in the Richmond community as an accompanist, singer songwriter and studio musician, and have continued to compose and perform piano music for local theatrical and private performances.

Theatre

As a working actor in the central Virginia region, I have gained experience working in musical theatre, classical theatre (mostly Shakespearean) and local film. That experience gave me great insight into numerous techniques including Stanislavski method, viewpoint and movement work, heightened text and acting for camera; all of which I use when coaching actors. I began working for SPARC, the School for the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community in 2013, and for Quill Theatre in 2014, giving me experience in musical theatre instruction and direction for students ages 6-18 and in creating and implementing my own classical and Shakespearean curriculum for secondary age students, respectively. I have directed two shows, both of which I helped write and both of which received high acclaim in the community, and have been giving monologue instruction and coaching privately for the past two years.

Voice (Music)

My training at Mary Washington was in classical voice with a focus in opera and operatic technique, but my love has always been musical theatre. I began my own personal training with a coach in 2003 that focused on the anatomy of the vocal instrument and body and the importance of using the resonators to enhance style in one's sound. That training has greatly influenced my own teaching style and since 2006 I have been coaching and training vocalists of all ages privately using those kinesthetic and anatomy based techniques. Currently, I perform mostly in the blues/folk style and have used my training with students to help them achieve whatever style and sound they desire. My students have gone on to success in the industry and I enjoy seeing and hearing their work. I am quite organic and responsive in the classroom and can tailor my instruction style to the specific wants and needs of my client.
