About Emily

I am a dedicated professional who believes that all students can learn. My passion is to find new and innovative ways to help students with disabilities learn content that they have previously found difficult. Over the past few years I have developed successful ways to teach Algebra 1 and pre-algebra to students with a variety of disabilities. I enjoy working with students of all ages and ability levels and am highly qualified to teach elementary subjects as well as Algebra 1. I enjoy being able to work with students one-on-one or in small groups in order to see how much they can grow over a short amount of time.

I have 4 years of teaching experience in self-contained, collaborative, and general education classrooms in the areas of pre-algebra and Algebra 1. I have taken and passed the Praxis II for Mathematics Content Knowledge.

My entire undergraduate degree focused on elementary education and various internships within the elementary classroom. I have tutored students with and without special needs in the areas of handwriting and reading. I have taken and passed the Elementary Content Knowledge Praxis II.

My graduate degree focused on special education for the general education curriculum. I graduated in 2013 with a 4.0 GPA and have dedicated the beginning of my teaching career to students with disabilities. I have successfully raised the pass rate for students with disabilities on the Algebra 1 SOL at my school.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding content or the need for differentiating content for your student!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Certified Mathematics Teacher

Elementary (K-6th)

I received a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education with a teaching endorsement in Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade. I have taken and passed 3 different Praxis II exams for elementary education in the areas of content knowledge, instruction and assessment, and content area exercises. My undergraduate degree included practicum and student teaching experiences in 2nd and 5th grade classrooms where I taught science, math, social students, reading, and writing.

Handwriting

I have spent time tutoring a child with special needs in the area of handwriting. I followed the Handwriting without Tears curriculum in order to help a child with a visual impairment and developmental delays in the areas of fine and gross motor skills learn to write. The curriculum focuses on teaching children to build the parts of a letter with wooden pieces first and moves on to tracing letters on a chalkboard before moving on to writing with pencil and paper.

Special Needs

I currently received a Master's Degree in Special Education for the General Education Curriculum and am licensed to work with students with high-incidence disabilities. I currently teach special education math at the secondary level, but am licensed to teach special education K-12. My Master's program included practicum experiences in elementary and secondary schools, tutoring, and student teaching at the secondary level. I have worked with students who have ADHD, autism, various learning disabilities, and emotional disabilities.

Highly recommend!!

Worked extremely well with my 7th grade pre algebra student. Very patient and explained the material until it was understood. Looking forward to using her more in the future.
