Creighton University (English)
Virginia Commonwealth University (Master's)
I am a retired English/Speech/Drama teacher, with over 40 years experience in the classroom. I have taught in both private and public schools, know the rigors of standardized testing, and was able to achieve an 85% pass rate for my writing classes on SOL tests for Sophomores. I am energetic and animated, and I like to challenge students to think beyond what they are used to seeing in the everyday classroom. I love to work along side students, actually doing the work that I assign, so that a model can be established. I also try to simply complex problems, particularly in writing, break down the parts, and then encourage students to use their creativity to complete their work.
I have taught grades 6-12, and can help students with all range of abilities. I enjoy the one-on-one experience of tutoring, as it allows me to understand how a student processes content and how effectively they are able to slowly, but confidently, improve their skills.
I have a wide variety of interests and experiences, including a long time position as a high school drama director. I love seeing the student flame of learning and insight ignite.
I earned a BA in English from Creighton University. MFA in Theater Education from VCU. I also completed 12 hours of graduate English credit at Georgia State University. Complete summer internship at the Eastern Virginia Writers Conference Workshop (2006).
40+ years of classroom teaching experience.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an MFA degree in Theater, which included instruction in Speech Education. I have taught Speech classes in high school and college. I would often work with students on important speeches that they needed to give for special occasions, like graduation. I have worked with businesses on how to make effective sales presentations.
