About Sarah

I grew up in Richmond and lived there until I moved to Nova Scotia to complete my undergraduate studies, majoring in Spanish and Psychology. When I finished, I wanted to travel so I applied and was accepted as a Language and Cultural Assistant through the Spanish Ministry of Education. I had an incredible time with my students and got my first exposure to teaching and working with children with Special Needs.

Shortly after returning to the US, I joined Americorps and moved to Boston for a year before settling in at home in Richmond. I spent a short stint in the corporate world before starting grad school for teaching. During my time in school I taught at Northstar Academy and volunteered at Elkhardt Middle School.

As a person who has always struggled with math I am adept at identifying and remedying challenges faced by my students. I prefer to use hands-on activities to help make an abstract concept more concrete. I have been known to adjust reading lessons to suit math lessons, reaching across the curriculum to give a well-rounded basis for math studies.

I enjoy making everything from mobiles to ooblek. Science can be a lot of fun for students and tutoring gives me the opportunity to share these activities in a meaningful and academic way!

I am certified to teach special education and my last position was in a self-contained classroom k-5. I have countless resources to tap into the unique talents and learning styles of these fantastic children!

My most recent tutoring opportunity was on a movie set over Spring Break. I am currently teaching high school but would cherish the opportunity to continue to develop the fundamentals our students need to move in to upper elementary, middle and high school with confidence and the skills for success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am licensed by the state of Virginia to teach Special Education k-12. When I taught within the inclusion setting, all of my students had SLD (specific learning disability), the category under which ADHD falls. Aside from differentiation, I create lessons that involve movement and gestures, teach study skills, and employ the use of "fidgets" to allow my students to physically engage while they are seated doing desk work.

Autism

I am licensed by the state of Virginia to teach Special Education k-12. I have experience teaching and tutoring students with Autism of all age levels and all subjects. I have resources that are tactile, and I am sensitive to students who have sensory sensitivities.

Special Needs

I am licensed by the state of Virginia to teach Special Education k-12. I have experience teaching both self-contained and inclusion students. My teaching resources cover social skills via interactive games to fine motor skills. I have taught an adapted curriculum and differentiate my lessons so that all students may access their academics in a fulfilling, meaningful way.
