About Julie

I have been teaching for 16 years and hold a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I enjoy tutoring students because it allows me to work one on one with a student so that we can delve deeper into the curriculum. It is important for me to pre-assess my students so that we an track their progress. Students feel rewarded when they can see their growth and begin to improve on assessments in the classroom. I enjoy teaching all elementary subjects, but I do have a passion for math. There seems to be a few road blocks in the math world and I find great joy in helping students navigate through the curriculum. There are several different ways to look at a math problem and finding the strategy that works best for a student is key to their success.

I enjoy working with students using manipulatives and math games to build their confidence and love for math. There are different approaches that a teacher can take to explain math concepts and I enjoy working with students in finding the strategy that works best for them.

Learning how to read opens the door to a whole new world. Taking time to demonstrate and explain phonics skills through games and activities can help a student feel successful. Comprehension can also be a struggling point when learning how to read. Teaching students to slow down and delve deep into what is taking place in the store can bring out their passion for reading.

I have been teaching for 16 years and have a BA in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I enjoy working with students and seeing their progress working with me and when they take assessments in the classroom.

I have taught phonics for quite a few years and find that students are more successful with their reading when they have a tool such as phonics to help them navigate through their reading.

I look forward to working with your child. My goal is to build confidence in their learning through providing them with tools and strategies that can make them successful with their academics.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra 1 to several students in Henrico. Each student made great gains on their in class quizzes and tests. I provide my students with useful strategies to help them remember concepts and to feel successful in the classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BA in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Curriculum and instruction. I have been teaching for 16 years and currently tutor privately on my own. I enjoy working one on one with students and tracking their progress as they master concepts.

Elementary Math

My degree is in Elementary Education, but I have also taken additional courses and training specifically related to teaching math. I have tutored several students in math ranging from 3rd grade through Algebra 1, as well as, teaching in the classroom. I use several different approaches and strategies when teaching a concept until I find what works best for my students.

Phonics

I have used several different programs to enhance students reading. I have found success with A to Z reading. I feel it is important to continual track phonics and comprehension through running records. Phonics is a wonderful strategy students can use to help them concur a new word they are not familiar with.
