I have been teaching adults to read English for 15 years. I have at times also tutored elementary school children in reading and writing. Even while obtaining my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, I enjoyed tutoring other classmates in various topics and I’d enjoy helping you reach your goal of reading, speaking, or writing better.

I have worked with both small groups and in a one to one setting. My students have ranged from people who were just learning their letters to those who were reading at an 8th grade equivalent. In all cases, the adults I’ve helped had not been reading at a level where they want to read and they have all made improvements. My students primarily come from two different backgrounds: native English speakers and ESL/ESOL students fluent in another language and learning to speak and/or write English.

The native English speakers could have missed a skill early on that has made reading difficult or they have a learning disability such as dyslexia . Many times these students have had the goal of obtaining their GED and so much work involves the GED topics.

The ESL/ESOL students have often wanted to focus primarily on their speaking and conversation skills. Once they have become better at having a conversation, they often want to learn to read and write in English.

If any of these sound like you, I have the skills through my past experience and continuing training to help you. My number one goal for all tutoring sessions is that you learn something in a fun and memorable way. It doesn’t mean it isn’t work, but you’ll learn the tools you need to figure out how to pronounce a word you’ve never seen. We’ll also work on making sure you understand what you read. After all, just being able to read the words doesn’t mean much if you can’t understand what you just read. Once I learn what your interests and goals are when you read better, the material we work with will be more tailored to you. From the beginning you will be making improvements.

General Computer

I have taught many individuals computer basics such as turning the computer and screen on and off, how to use a mouse, how to search the internet, setting up an email account and sending and receiving emails. My strength lies in my patience. For many individuals unfamiliar with technology, it takes more than once to master a topic. I'm just the person to show Mom and Dad what to do with the computer so they can see pictures of the Grandkids. If you're not careful, they may even end up on Facebook!

Knowledgeable and Patient.

Janet agreed to help my mother, a 70 yr old, learn more about general computer use, the internet, her Macbook, her iPhone. I wasn't there but I'm usually my mother's IT support so I know how Mom gets flustered. Mom was SO grateful for Janet's help. She was an excellent tutor, kind, patient, and understood where my mom was in her knowledge and progress. She was great!

Good session.

Janet is teaching my son with autism to improve his reading and writing skills. She worked with him patiently, was very up-beat, and tried to explain things in a context that interested him. Very happy with his first session.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

We have completed two session for my eight year old son. She quickly assessed his current reading level and incorporated relevant activities into his lesson plan. Janet has identified a great method encourage his desire for reading. Her approach to teaching makes my son comfortable and looking forward to the next session. As a mom who is unable to attend the sessions I look forward to the detailed feedback she provides. We are very pleased and will continue to work together.
