University of Virginia (History)
I have taught pre-Calculus, Algebra 2, Geometry, Algebra 1, and Linear Algebra at a private high school for the past four years. In addition to my math courses, I have taught AP US Government and Politics, US History, Physics, and Biology. I organized a math honor society at the school to introduce interested students to topics not normally covered in high school math classes, such as fourth-dimensional geometry, map theory, and biological modeling.
I have also tutored students in pre-Calculus, Geometry, Algebra 2, Algebra 1, and SAT prep.
Students are encouraged to ask questions in a tutoring session, whether they are about the how or the why of a given problem . My goal is to have students understand each problem and move confidently to the solution.
I am eager to work with students to achieve their academic goals. I promise one added benefit: the better a student understands math, the more interesting it becomes. I highly recommend Elwyn. He is super patient and he explains anything you are having a hard time understanding in such a way that it will seem easy afterwards.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught Algebra 1 and the math classes that follow: Algebra 2 and Geometry. I know, from experience, which topics in Algebra 1 require the greatest care and which are most essential for success in the years ahead.
I have taught Algebra 2 for four academic years in a private school. During this time we used three different textbooks and that has given me an understanding of the strength and weaknesses of each. I am flexible enough to adopt an approach that will help the student.
I have been teaching High School mathematics at a private school for the past four years. My courses have included Geometry, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Linear Algebra. All of my students are college-bound, and I have taken care to incorporate SAT preparation into my lectures and lesson plans.
I taught a course in Linear Algebra for the Seniors who had passed AP Calculus and AP Statistics in their Junior year. The class uses Gilbert Strang's Linear Algebra, 4th Edition along with other course materials available on-line from MIT.
I have taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and pre-Calculus at a private school for 4 years. I know what skills are necessary to succeed in these courses. In particular, I have worked with students, both as a teacher and a tutor, who need to improve their mastery of pre-Algebra in order to succeed in High School.
I have four years experience teaching mathematics at a private school. I have taught Precalculus (called Advanced Math at my school). The course is demanding, but we generally finish the book with a few weeks to spare.
I have taught math to college-bound students in a private school for the past four years. I have taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and pre-Calculus in the classroom, and I have assisted students in their SAT preparation after hours.
