About Sandra

Enthusiastic teaching professional with a genuine interest in fostering students’ cognitive and social growth. I taught 6th grade math and reading in Richmond, Virginia for three years. I also taught elementary students with social and academic challenges for the past two years. I served as a homebound teacher for seven years. during that time, I worked one-on-one with students in their home, or at a public setting. Most of my students increased their grades during their study time with me.

I encourage students to ask questions and I ensure them "no question is a dumb or stupid question." I strive to provide a welcoming environment to enable my students to express their feelings and learn to listen to others. I also believe in frequent communications with parents so that the parents are aware of the difficulties as well as the accomplishments achieved by their child.

My undergraduate degree in Business Administration equipped me to land jobs that required lots of writing and public speaking. Therefore, during oral as well as written presentations, I made certain I had dotted every "i" and crossed every "t". It was important for me to be very articulate when I represented my company. I consider myself an imaginative teacher. I strive to break monotony and encourage students to take lively participation in the class. Albert Einstein says that imagination is more important than knowledge.

“Human progress is possible only through education. Without imagination, education becomes a kind of intellectual recycling of the same knowledge passed from teacher to student and back to teacher on the test. Education should do more than simply transmit information; it should develop skills such as imagination that evolve our knowledge and move us forward as a species.”

I attempt to teach English with interest and effectiveness at any grade level to promote student involvement so that students are able to develop their creative self-expression.

I also believe in student interaction in the English class to empower learners and help them develop their communication skills. Activities such as role-playing, groups discussions, mock interviews, etc. build students' confidence and equips them to become better speakers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I am a former 6th grade Exceptional Education math, science and reading teacher from Richmond, Virginia. While teaching in Richmond, I also provided one-on-one services to children with academic and/or behavior problems in all subject areas, grades 1 - 12. I pride myself with patience as well as creative ways to challenge children to think outside the box. I look for basic strategies to help them get a better understanding of math. When I am teaching multiplication...I drill and drill the easy ones first by telling them, 0 times any number is 0; 1 times any number is that number, 5 times any number always end in 0 or 5, and 10 times any number...simply add a zero. Surprisingly, once students master, 0, 5 and 10...the other numbers in between become easier, because together we come up with other creative skills.

Proofreading

I am the designated proofreader for a middle governing body of the Presbyterian Church and am happy to give you the email and/or phone number to the Executive for a reference.

Special Needs

Special needs children and adults have difficulty learning abstract terms and concepts. Therefore, it is important to provide them with concrete objects and events—items they can touch, hear, smell, etc. Special needs students need lots of praise. When I praise my students, I am very specific. Instead of saying, “You did well,” or “I like your work,” I am explicit in saying something like, “I was particularly pleased by the way in which you organized the rock collection.”

I have taught special needs students (with IEPs) on all levels. I currently collab teach on the high school level, and am charged with overseeing accommodations for 40+ students.

I know all too well that most special needs students have:
Poor auditory memory—both short term and long term.
Low tolerance level and a high frustration level.
Poor self-esteem.
Easily distractible.
Finds it difficult, if not impossible, to stay on task for extended periods of time.
Difficulty in working with others in small or large group settings.

My teaching experience as well as my fostering to children with special needs has afforded me the opportunity to exercise my knowledge and experience in teaching and encouraging them to be all they can become, in spite of.
