About Gretta

I love teaching others because I love to learn. I am a graduate of Randolph College class of 2016. I majored in economics and minored in both Chinese studies and religious studies. In high school, I was an honors student and member of both National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. My composite ACT score was a 29, my SAT score was 1750, and my ASVAB was a 92, with all line scores above 120.

I specialize in tutoring English and writing. My score on the English Regents exam was a 95, and my strong points are grammar and sentence structure. I can tutor in both academic and fiction writing ; I received a commendation on my writing my freshman year of college and have had my name in the college magazine several semesters for excellent writing. I was also a writer for The Sundial, the school paper.

I look forward to hearing from and meeting you, and helping you achieve your goals in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASVAB

During my senior year of high school I attempted to enlist in the Army. My ASVAB score was a 92, which my recruiter said was the highest score he'd seen in my area at that time. All of my line scores were above a 120, allowing me to have my pick of jobs in the military. I studied for months ahead of time, and know all the ins and outs of the test, as well as strategies for studying, and taking the ASVAB.

Bible Studies

I grew up heavily involved in my local Church - Sunday school after the sermon, youth group every week, and volunteering at children's Bible club. Religion has always fascinated me, so after coming to Randolph College I decided to minor in religious studies.

Chinese

I am currently minoring in Chinese (Mandarin) at Randolph College. I began studying Chinese my freshman year of college - I am now a junior - and my current enrollment is in Chinese 302: Third Year Modern Chinese. At the end of May, I will have taken a total of 6 semesters of Chinese. I have maintained a B average or higher each semester.

My strong points are grammar and writing. My classes require many compositions, which I then have to present. I've always worked very hard, and ensured that all of my compositions were perfect. I can write formally and informally, and at this point can write several thousand characters at this point.

Elementary Math

I scored a 590 on the math portion of my SAT, and did equally well on the math portion of my ACT. I was an honors math student in high school, and also finished calculus 1 and 2 at the college level for my economics degree.

Proofreading

I used to write for the Teen Vox section of The Leader Herald newspaper, and all articles had to be perfect in terms of grammar and syntax. I am also a former English major with a focus in creative writing, and sometimes entire class periods were devoted to proofreading classmates' work. I continue to write fiction as a hobby, and one of my favorite things to do is edit.

Regents

In high school, I was an honors student and finished in the top 10% of my class. I excelled in the Regents exams: I had a 95 on my English Regents. I received an A- on the Biology Regents, a B+ on the Chemistry Regents, and a 99 on the History Regents exam.

Religion

My second minor at Randolph College is religious studies. This requires me to take classes on Buddhism, Christianity, and then either Islam or Hinduism. I was also raised in a Christian home, and was very active in the Church before college. My main focus in my minor is Buddhism, but beginning in the Fall I will also be taking classes on Islam.

Study Skills

In high school, I was in the honors program and graduated in the top 10% of my class. I have made Dean's List half of my semesters in college so far, as well. I can thank my dedication to my studies, as well as good time management and study habits to this success. When I was a high school student I tutored elementary school students in math and English.

One thing I do to keep myself on track is keep a running chart made up of four lists: Important and Due Soon, Not Important and Due soon, Important and Due Later, Not Important and Due Later. I always start with this list because then I can further appropriate my time to make sure that my work is not only done, but is completed to the best of my ability.

Writing

While I was in high school, I was a part of The Leader Herald's Teen Vox writers. My first year of college I tutored a doctor from China in writing so she could re-take the TOEFL and switch her medical license. I was also an English major with a concentration in creative writing until the end of last year, when I switched to economics. I write every day, and am about to start sending out works of fiction to literary magazines.
